I was at the range and a fellow was complaining about the poor accuracy he was getting on a large target at 100 yards. I told him to check the scope rings and bases to be sure they were tight and they were. Then the action screws were examined and they were fine. I looked at the box of ammo and asked if he had ever had these problems with his .270 Win. He said he did not own a .270 and was shooting a .30-06. A friend gave him the factory ammo and he never checked it. The rifle was fine and I hope the shooter learned a lesson. All the best...

Wow! How did the cases look? A buddy of mine did this somehow ...
I still don't see how it worked firing 9mms in a .40.

He is likely to have some more .30-06 brass from that range session.

That is just downright scary Gil.
You would have thought that he would have heard the bullet rattling down the barrel when fired. He is a very lucky man that something bad didn't happen to his rifle.

Yes it is !!!
It's possible to shoot the 25-06 and the .270 in a 30-06 because they share the same 2.0526 head space dimension. The .280 is a little longer at 2.1042

Mike, I've seen it done 3 times !!!
One was a Glock that would jam after being fired .... took that guy 3 shots to realize he had the wrong ammo !!!
The other 2 were with XD's
One guy shot a half mag before he noticed the recoil wasn't right, the other had a mag of mixed 9's and 40's, he'd kept on going if I hadn't stopped him.
Both the XD's cycled the 9's without a problem........ lesson learned for worst case scenario !!!

It is possible for even the .222 to fire in a .223 given the right conditions. A controlled-feed action can easily capture the rim and hold it in place enough to allow the firing pin to engage the primer. A friend had this happen with a Winchester M70 that was stamped ".222 Remington" but had a chamber for .223 Remington. Lots of gas leak and an odd looking case, but no real damage on that particular rifle. We never did figure out the miss-stamping since Winchester records show that rifle leaving the factory as a .222. I'm guessing someone had a chambering reamer and opened it up without re-stamping. It did shoot .223s great once we figured it out.
There are a lot of other cartridges where the same thing could happen under the right conditions. It just proves that one should always pay attention to what they are doing!
