Has anyone had any experience in the field with a Sheperd scope. It is a form of mil-dot/range finding scope.

I have shot one at the range.

While it is a range finding scope, it is nothing like mil dots. In fact, it is so much easier to use than mil dots, it makes one wonder why mil dots are so popular.

The Shepherd is a range finding BDC reticule. My experience, even though I did not get a chance to play with the range finding capabilities, was that is was a quality piece of equipment with great glass. I found the reticule, while somewhat busy, was not distracting, and I like the concept.

I have a Springfield Armory Gen II which is based on the same principles. In my mind, the Shepherd would be much faster in hunting situations; the advantage for the Springfield would be the standoffs for wind compensation.

I will probably buy a Shepherd for the 25-06 I am building. I keep hoping that they will come out with a 30mm tube version, because I really like the light transmission of the larger tube.

Shepard scopes are ment to rangefind a 18" target. While Mildots can be used to make "quick" charts that will range find any length your target may be.

For example a Mildot will allow to range find almost anything and using the non-electronic (slide rule type) calculator called "Mil-Dot Master" you can determine range quickly using any sized target. Wink

Dakota:

I will be watching this post with interest, as I am curious as well, they are kind of pricey, but the concept and intent of the scope has me intrigued, besides it would be a nice addition to any deer hunting arsenal.
