My son just passed his restricted permit teat and is now looking to buy his first handgun. He is considering the Glock 17. I have not owned or used one so can't advise him on the choice. I do know they don't like lead. Anyone have experience with this pistol they care to share?

I carried a glock md 22, When I was with the sheriff department , It was and It was very accurate and they do not like lead because of the type of lands.

I had a Glock 22, a 40 caliber and the most accurate semi auto I've ever shot. It seems all other semi autos tended to twist in my hand but the Glock didn't and I think for that reason I was always able to shoot well with it. 40 caliber is a bit too strong for me and a 9mm would better suit me so I ended up selling it (same price as I bought it for used). The re-sale value stays pretty standard if they're not scarred up or abused. You can easily break them down into very few parts and it's quick to clean them up. I put an extended mag release on it and did a trigger spring change over (less pull on the trigger) pretty easy to do. Never liked the mushy trigger pull but the spring change helped a little. Don't know about using lead, I always used jacketed reload rounds and found that cheap ammo did what cheap ammo does, ruin you day with lots of stove pipes. Never had that happen with run of the mill ammo or reloads, just the dirt cheap stuff. Put reliable ammo in it and you have a very reliable handgun. I wouldn't think lead would be a problem but with getting past the ramp. If it doesn't hang up there then it'll probably work fine. Like I said tho- don't know- never did it.

The glock company say not to use lead in them because of the desinge of the bore. the model 22 40 cal that I had didn't seem to have much recoil. The 9mm I have seems to have more.

I have 4 Glocks, 17, 2 x 34's, and a 35.

All accurate, all used in competition.

I only use plated or jacketed bullets,

Your son won't go wrong with one.

It seems that I am way behind the time.
I never realize that the word glock and accurate can be used in the same sentence.
Prolly its time to re evaluate the gun.

If its any help Australuan Airforce fighter pilots are issued with them as they are lighter than the old brownings.
If a fighter pilot cant f#£% one up, theyre unbreakable, unlike the aircraft they strap on.

Question
At a party with 200 people in a smallish hall how do you pick the fighter pilot?

He'll tell you.

Mac, As for Glocks in general you can't go wrong !!!
It's one of the most widely used guns in IDPA for good reason.

The question that needs to be answered.....is it the right gun for your son ???
If he hasn't handled and shot them he needs to before he makes a purchase. I know guys that struggle shooting Glocks and are too damn stubborn to admit they've made a mistake. I personally don't own one simply because they just don't work for me.

As for lead.....I know guys who shoot nothing but lead in their Glocks.
Hard lead is a must, soft lead is what causes the problems. Do a google search and I bet you'll find some info on the subject.

I love my Glocks. Definitely go to the local range and fire several different types. I started with a 17 and have only added more to the safe. One thing I don't like are their sights, U dot. I have changed them all out to 3 dot sights. Might as well get night sights so the pistol can be used 24 hours a day.

I've shot a few Glocks and personally didn't care for the ergonomics. I like the Springfield XD much better, again ergonomically. I like the Ruger SRs too. The best bet is to actually shoot a bunch of different guns to see what fits him better. I really don't think you can go too wrong with any of the big name manufacturers.

Thanks for the input everyone. He is sitting on the fence just now as he also is looking at the Walther PPQ or PPX. He is going into the range to fire both. He has fired my M&P 9 and finds it a bit snappy. That may have been because I have large grips on this pistol

Quite a few years ago I got a Glock 17 in a trade. I didn't really want it, but it also came with 1,000 rounds of military surplus ammo. I figured I would just shoot up the ammo and then trade the gun. In the process of shooting that ammo I had a few problems...excessive recoil and split cases which blew gas into the magazine well and ejected the magazine - quite forcibly! Now all of this ammo was foreign with much being Egyptian. Not reading Egyptian, I did a little more research and found that ammo that caused the problems was never intended for handguns. Instead, it was made for automatic assault weapons. Pressures were considerably higher than handgun ammunition, but that Glock took the beating without a hitch.
That Glock happened to be part of the first wave of imports. With continuing technology and engineering I would bet that today's firearms are even stronger. I did sell that gun, but only because I never really cared for 9mm and still prefer 1911 .45 ACP. Regardless of my bias, I see nothing to keep me from recommending a Glock for those who like them.

The Glock G17 is probably their finest. I have that plus a G21SF, G26, G27, G30S and a G32. Never had a failure of any kind with any Glock I've owned.

If your going to get the Glock in 9mm, get the Model 19, best compromise between a full sized duty gun (Model 17), and a concealable gun (Model 26).

Did he try the Browning Hi-Power. IMHO John Moses Browning's best pistol design, even better than the 1911.
