ive never been too worried about velocity, i find a load that shoots good groups and chrono it for ballistic info....til today 30-06 22" bbl 10" twist. load is 46.5gr imr4350 pushing 168gr nosler BT at 2333 fps. grps are .5 to .628 consistently at 100 yds but is that enough "oomph" for that bullet to be effective? Confused

I should clarify that my 300Whisper have only 1000 fps at the muzzle ...

Never have problem with the speed before.
Animals do not get stronger by the year, even 1000fps is much much faster than a rock thrown by hand.
When the projectile arrive, your "target" will never worry about what the velocity it has.
With the accuracy of the gun, at 100 yards all you got to do is to aim it properly, and the projectile will do its job.

168grns in the boiler room will do the dead deer thing easy peasy. so its not doing super duper speeds. try telling Bushy and co that thier 30/30s are not enough gun for a deer(then run real fast jinking as you go Very Happy ) with the kind of groups you get you shouldnt have any problems.
to put it another way. checking my sierra load manual thier 168grn hpbt with muzzle velocity of 2300fps has 1973ftlbs of energy at muzzle 1828 at 100yrds and still has1032 at 400yrdsyes it has65.34 inches of drop but hang who wants to shoot at 400 anyway. point is 1000ftlbs is a widely accepted minimum energy requirment for deer so you have heaps of ooomph just dont try to stretch your barrel with that load. hope this helps.

Alot of discussions about velocity have been thrown around here, but also we have to remember at 600 yrds a .30-"06 is still lethal when the wingnut behind the buttplate is working. I was amazed at the resulting velocity the first time it was shown to me. Like bushy says we under estimate alot of cartridges that worked perfectly until replaced by the next. I still won't stand in line to catch any in my teeth.

wtf Or for another comparison;think about the commie round(7.62x39) and it is using a lighter, less ballistic bullet than you are using in the '06.Any military /ex military will tell you that they are still quite deadly at 400+ yards. My own sks that was purchased nearly 20 years ago has been shot accurately(with witnesses)out to 800yds!I'm glad I was'nt on the recieving end of the target!BTW-do a web search on the '06 and find out what kind of loading was used for it originally and what ranges it was designed for by the military! Shocked

The design of the Nosler B-Tip allow it to operate in the 1500fps range....... your good to about 500 yards !!!

Have you tried loads with more velocity ???
I'm willing to bet you will find another harmonics node that gives the same consistency at a higher velocity !!!

No...But he was passed out from "pit bull" fright. Laughing

Do ya have any H4831 or H4831SC laying around? And maybe some sierra 165 grain BTHP's in a box somewhere?

If ya do, try this. 58 to 60 grains of H4831[SC]. 59 grains and the sierra bullet are my go to .30-06 round. I'm getting 2665 fps (AV) with a Sierra 180 grain BTSP and 2728 fps (AV) with the Sierra 165 grain BTHP. The 165 grainer gives me a three shot spread of 1 5/8" at 200 yards. If I had a better bench rest other then my pickup tailgate I think it might do even better. All this from a Browning 22" A-bolt.
