Wells folks after being very slap dash with my hunting loads for my .270 over the years ,I have got sorted and are now doing things a lot more consistent. even using same brass
I got a bit of a shock last year when I couldn't get a half decent group no matter what I tried 1 1/2---3" was as good as it got.
I discovered loose scope BASES during Easter weekend and that got me to 1 1/2" consistently but thought to go a bit further so I bought a re bedding kit from www.terminal ballistics research and set about a front and rear bedding job after fitting alloy pillars to the old girl.
went out today and 1st shot was out to right by about 2" next 2 went in the 1 1/2" group with it.
moved 4 clicks and put 3 quick shots into group of JUST over 1" 27mm in fact so Im very happy about how well the job has gone.
bought box of Speer 130grn hot core to try out as well. them Bambi's best be looking out now

Great, Elvis! 130 grain in a .270, that is pretty light for you isn't it? Confirming you aren't using mixed brass for your load development? Was that at 50 meters?

130 for general hunting...the 150 partitions will be for stags/rut hunting and the 170s that I have left are for in the bush/forest.
and yes no longer being happy go lucky and mixing brass.......
110 paces.
and image should be 90 degrees clockwise......

Elvis, you might try adjusting your COAL to see if you can fine tune your groupings.

COAL.....hmmmmmm cant go much deeper, got about 2mm to seat shallower before wont fit in mag and need to go waaaaay shallower than that to get any where near the rifling.
1" is plenty heaps good enough for me...that will get me out to 400yards on a good day and in my 30+ years of chasing deer Ive not shot beyond 300 on more than 3 or 4 occasions.......... it is nice to know I can do it now if needed.

1" groups are pretty good for medium/large game loads. That translates (statistically at least) into 4" at 400 yards. Assuming that 4 inches is distributed evenly around a central aiming point, no given shot is more than 2" away from center. That's virtually a bullseye on game of that size. Good work and glad you got her figured out!

Elvis, I stop now when a load is good enough. However, I more often than not see dramatic differences in group size with 0.020" of COAL change. I'm about to go to 0.015" increments, then maybe 0.010" when I'm fine tuning accuracy. Let's see, 2.54 cm = 1 inch, then 0.010" = 0.254 mm

1 inch group is good for a light weight.

the "soda straw" barrel sure gets hot quickly...all those barrages on wallabies and goats over the years haven't done any favors but cant have done too much harm either.

Elvis, on my Tikka T3 Lite, the barrel heats up real fast also. I only shoot 2 bullets then let it cool down. If I don't, the third one wonders from the other two and opens the group up more than is representative of a cold barrel.

Slim,
I have a similar issue with my 25/06, she gets hot real quick.
First 2 shots right where you want them, no 3 takes a cut lunch and a compass and goes wandering.
Thats with a bedding job, floated barreland a light trigger, new scope, rings etc
Hind sight is a beautiful thing, I dont think it likes 120 grn projectiles either.
Elvis,
Nice group, how long did the finger extraction take?
Now go and see how she does at 200 and 300 meters.

finger extraction??????? or do you mean how long have I been mucking around doing it half arsed/she'll be right?????
had rifle since I was 16..now 43
been reloading for her for 19 years and have been happy enough with mixed brass etc etc up untill this year.
years back I sat at bench on a range and put every different load I could get my hands on into same target..from 110-160 grn loads probably 10 in all and could cover group with a playing card so havent worried too much as 99% of my shots are under 150 yards.......... last few years have seen some big stags walk away as just too far for that sort of attitude.
