I was wondering if anyone out there still shoots this great 7mm round. My father swore by it when he had one so I have allways been interested in it. I was thinking of trying to find one or find a good action and have a gunsmith barrel it in that caliber. If anyone has done a similar project I would like to know how it turned out and what they liked or didn't like.

Great cartridge that just never made it. I recall seeing a rifle that was a commercial Mauser action in this caliber. From time to time they show up on the used gun racks. Haven't seen one in a few years. A competent gunsmith should be able put a .284 barrel on a Mauser or other suitable action. All the best...

Great case - about 1965-66 Jim Cooper of Ludington, MI put a Douglas heavy sporter barrel on a FN Mauser action - 30-06 lenght - and installed keepers inside the magazine to keep the cases from jamming ahead with recoil - this allowed bullets to be seated out even with the bottom of the neck. The first 5 shots at 100m measured 5/8" I was shooting a 120 gr. bullet/mild load (4831 I think) - the gun still sports the Weaver V8 scope!!! Don't see many of them around anymore.

Fox ridge outfitters offers a Encore rifle barrel in 284 Win if you happen to have a Encore frame. You can specify any length from 16 1/4 to 26 inches.

The 6.5x284 is so accurate I would build a 6.5x284 over a std 284win anyday. Friend of mine picked up a base Cooper single shot bolt action in 6.5x284, hell he has 5 Coopers. Anyway this was Cooper cheapest
bolt action it shoot's consistent 1/2 or better groups at 200meters. Not bad for
900.00 rifle. I am waiting for Cooper to offer a repeater. But with groups
like that who should ever need a second shot.....only me Laughing
His other Coopers are 17HMR,222rem,22br,6mm PPC and the 6.5x284
Anyone thinking about really buying a Cooper should PM me, and I will give him your phone number. He works at a gun shop, that sells Coopers. He ordered 3 for him self just so they could become a Cooper dealer. They have sold around 12 Coopers in the last few years, and Not one unhappy buyer yet
He real picky so for him to own 5, really say something.

Thanks for all the info from everyone. I'm not sure exactly which road I will take. It will most likely depend on the deal that I run into. If I find a nice rifle allready chamberd for .284 I might try to get it. But if I find a good action somewhere I might have it barreled for something like the 6.5X284. Only time will tell and hopefully I have enough $$ when a deal presents itself.
