Howdy. Do you have to have special choke tubes for steel shot. I might have a chance to go goose hunting here soon and was wondering. I have never hunted geese before and don't no much about it. Thanks.
Joe

What brand of shotgun? Remington's chokes are compatible with steel or lead while some other brands, such as mossberg, require special, harder tubes for use with steel. The standard Mossberg accu choke is not compatible with steel.

Joe,
My tubes have a dual label like Mod for lead and full for steel. The chokes are 1 up for steel, so an IC for lead would be a Mod for steel.

I have been told that you DO NOT use a full choke for lead, with steel shot, ever.

Your 1100 should be fine with steel shot.......the Remchokes work with either. My full choke tube that came with my Rem 11-87 says for lead or steel on tube however my experience is that you get full choke patterns out of a modified tube, as Swampfox wrote. My favorite steel load for geese was Remingtons Duplex BBBx2, I am not sure if it is still available.

I have heard alot of talk about shooting steel through a chke that is for lead shot only. I have been shooting the factory chokes for my browning wich say lead shot only with steel shot and have never had a problem. I think the reason they say not to is it "may" bulge your barrel. What they mean is you should buy our more expensive extender choke that will do the same thing as your factory choke.

Personally i dont have a lot of experience into screw in chokes but they seem somewhat unreliable(iam not sure thats the word im looking for)
my dad always uses either his Rem 870(30"bbl, full) or the Marlin Goosegun and i use my new Luigi Franchi Semi auto so we dont have guns with screw in chokes but we went hunting with one guy, he had a brand new Benelli pump shotgun with 3 1/2 in chamber, he was shooting 3 1/2 at ducks haha! until we told him otherwise. oh well back to the point. he screwed his choke in pretty hard but i noticed that when i held his gun after a good time of shooting that his choke was just loosely screwed into the barrel. that kind of scared me, anyone else have this problem?

me and my dad, we will stick with traditional shotguns!

Good advise by everybody Joe.
I would go with the modified choke just like the rest of the guys do.
Addict will confirm that I have always used full chokes with steel to get tighter patters and thus, cutting down on the wounding of ducks and geese.
Addict will also confirm, that not everybody is as good of a wing shot as I am. Laughing Laughing

Hey Joe, after your hunt, try to post some pictures of you and your ducks.
Try to smile a little more this time. Very Happy

Eric
