Salt Lake City FanX 2014

[ Photo Ops ] [ Autographs ] [ Convention ] [ Costumes ]

I was happy they announced alot of Star Trek and Sci-fi guests for the spring Salt Lake City "FanX" convention. I wasn't sure if we would attend, but as they kept adding more and more guests I left it up to my boy if he wanted to go. He didnt get to attend the trek convention in Las Vegas. I got tickets and let him pick a couple photo ops and people to get autographs from. He was most excited to meet Marina Sirtis (Troi) and Jonathan Frakes (Riker) from Star Trek Next Generation. He also wanted to get a Photo op with William Shatner and Nathan Fillion & Adam Baldwin. At pre-registration I was given an extra Thursday ticket that my wife was able to use. It was a fun convention, not alot of people until Saturday when it became a mad-house due to Nathan Fillion and Patrick Stewart arriving.

Photo Ops

I regretted not getting a photo op with William Shatner in Las Vegas, so I was excited to hear him announced for the FanX convention! We were able to meet him and get a picture.

William Shatner

Nathan Fillion was announced as a guest a short time before the convention started. They offered a "Firefly" photo op with him and Adam. One of my most favorite TV series, it was great to meet them. Amusingly, the computer system broke down exactly when it was our turn for the picture so we got to stand there with them for 5 minutes or so.

Sir Patrick Stewart was announced as a surprise guest after the convention had already started. The next morning I went and got the photo ops lined up, as did a ton of other people. Lots of people were flying in from out of state just to meet their "captain". During the photo op Patrick was very gracious and greeted each fan as they walked up.

Autographs

My boy wanted really wanted only two autographs, Marina Sirtis and Jonathan Frakes. The lines were short so we stopped to meet them both. They were both really chatty and talked with my boy for a bit. He was excited to finally meet them.

Also met Julie Benz, I like the show Defiance and her character so I wanted to meet here while I had the chance.

Convention Photos

Wife and Son starting off the con

Kyla Kennedy: The Walking Dead

Youngest actress there, had such a sad role in TWD

Kelly Hu: Scorpian King, XMen, Warehouse 13

James Marsters: Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Julie Benz: Defiance, Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Talked to Julie for a moment, very nice and sweet actress. Looking forward to Defiance Season 2

Brandon Eaton, Zoey 101

Drea De Matteo: The Sopranos, Sons of Anarchy

Aaron Douglas: Battlestar Galactica

Talked to Aaron several times during the Con, he was always extremely friendly and funny. He was surprised I knew he was a big TShirt fan and chatted quite a bit about his collection. We also talked quite a bit about when his character learned he was a cylon. It was interesting.

William Shatner: Star Trek

Penultimate Star Trek actor. He did several different autograph sessions taking breaks between. He was engaging with his fans and seemed to be enjoying himself.

Karl Urban: Star Trek, Almost Human, Judge Dredd

Karl had a fun time talking to fans, he was very funny and animated. As always extremely nice and grateful to the fans.

Marina Sirtis: Star Trek

Marina is such a sweetie, my boy most wanted to meet her and she took her time and talked to him for quite a while before signing an nice personalized autograph. She remembered me and my wife from last years Las Vegas convention.

Brent Spiner: Star Trek

Gates McFadden: Star Trek

Micheal Dorn: Star Trek

Jonathan Frakes: Star Trek

Jonathan was my boy's 2nd most want to meet celebrity's there. Jonathan leaned forward and talked to my boy, asking questions and having a good time. Very nice and charming time with him.

Aaron Douglas: live panel

Aaron was hilarious on stage, told a bunch of funny on set stories the best of which was going "commando" and a mishap with the audio guy who was running a microphone down his coveralls.

Me and my Son, in line for Shatner Photo op

Ioan Gruffudd: Fantastic Four

Adam Baldwin: Firefly / Serenity, Chuck

Adam is extremely nice and friendly with his fans. Very animated and as always has a great selection of TShirts.

Kelly Hu: live panel

A little less fun than I hoped it would be, she told a few funny stories about filming on set

Gates McFadden and Denise Crosby: live panel

An interesting panel, not as funny as the others. Didnt realize Bing Crosby is Denise's grandfather.

Karl Urban: live panel

Karl's panel was absolutely hilarious. He was a little loopy due to cold meds and it showed. One of the funniest panels

Julie Benz: live panel

Julie's panel I hoped would cover more Definance but it was rather boring. We actually left early.

Brent Spiner talking to Billy Dee Williams

As Brent was on his way to his panel he stopped to chat with Lando for a moment

Brent Spiner, live panel

Brent was extremely funny as always. From the beginning to the end it was non-stop laughs. He tends to take enjoyment in flustered fans and poorly phrased questions.

Edward James Olmos: Battlestar Galactica, Blade Runner

Eddy was great and friendly. He enjoyed people just coming up to talk to him. I chatted with him about BSG and Bladerunner and it was quite a thrill. Very nice and soft spoken.

Denise Crosby: Star Trek, The Walking Dead

Edward James Olmos: Live panel

Eddy's panel was interesting, he takes ages to answer a question though. It was funny to hear about the on set arguments and issues during Miami Vice. He said he loves BSG so much he still rewatches it.

Eddy also made a comment about how he was excited to be a part of the FanX convention, how we broke 100,000 fans and this is now the 3rd largest con in America. He said he loved his time here and its the best convention he has ever attended

Jonathan Frakes: Star Trek, director Agents of Shield, Castle

Frake's panel was extremely funny as well. He went to school with Bill Allred of X96 so they had lots of fun stories going way way back.

Frakes made one touching comment. He said in his 27 years of doing conventions, Salt Lake City was the best convention he had ever attended as a guest. He said the fans here are more charming and friendly and he absolutely loved his time here.

This poor woman was very nervious and had a hard time asking her question. Frakes walked across the stage as she tried to talk, down the stairs then over to her and put his arm around her. She got even more flustered as her hero had his arm around her. It was funny and sweet at the same time.

Nathan Fillion: Headed to panel

Low point of the con! We did not make it into the ballroom as it had filled up. I got to see Nathan as they brought him to the panel, but I was about 30 people from being let in the door to see it. Very sad as I heard later a lot of people said it was hilarious. At least I got a photo op with him later.

Laurie Holden: The walking dead

Jon Bernthal: The Walking Dead, The Pacific

Micheal Dorn and Marina Sirtis live panel

Dorn and Sirtis were extremely funny, as most all the Trek celebs are. They told a variety of funny stories, told about their deep friendships among the cast.

Marina concluded with a very heartfelt "Thank You" to the fans and how humbled they were as actors to be apart of this.

Adam Baldwin live panel

Adam's panel was also funny. First questioneer asked for a Hug so Adam had him come up on stage. After that, he started giving hugs to everyone on state. He said he loved roles where he gets to shoot guns, and he said its ok to say that being here in "Utah", the crowd cheered.

Misc Costumes

I took pictures of some of the better costumes people had. Some are blurry, I tried to take pictures when possible but I didn't stop people to get photo's.
