Howdy. Anybody own or has shot the savage model 12fv varmint series. I was checking them out on there web site it looks like a very nice rifle. Heavy barreled, dual pillar bedded, accu trigger, free floated and the mfsr was $549.00 thats a pretty good price. Just lookin for opinions. ( im sure there's some out there ) Laughing

I bought a 12 FV in 223 for a prarie dog trip two years ago. It has the accutrigger and I like it. It came from the factory set at 2 1/4 lbs, a weight I prefer to hunt with. Accuracy is excellent with several factory rounds and reloads.

I would say shop around for a better price. Develope a good relationship with a local dealer and you should be able to buy it in the range of 450, mabe less.
There are dealers out there that sell dealer cost + 10% + Shipping.

Main complaint that I have is the flemsy stock but it did not hamper the accuracy on the hunting trip. Buy it and replace the stock later. Some replace it with the Savage 12 BVSS laminated stock when one can be found for sale when someone is upgrading. There are nice aftermarket stocks available too.

Safe shooting,
Chris

Howdy.Thanx for the advice popgun. I have a dealer i use most of the time he has a small shop sometimes i might pay 20-30 dollars more but he is a good friend so i try to help him stay in biz. He can get it for me for $ 490 out the door. Im leaning torwards the 223 i have shot the 223 in the army and like the cal. It should do what i want it to do fox/groundhogs/ and hopefully soon coyote. Again thanx for the advice

There's little doubt Savage is making accurate rifles, but too often they're called "the ugly rifle" by their detractors. Savage has changed the stock on the model 12 this year to make it much more streamlined, got rid of the blocky forend with its strange shaped forend tip. It's actually quite attractive now and comes in .204Ruger, .223 and .22-250, all in single shot configuration. I may have one in .204Ruger before the year is out. Best wishes.

shrpshtrjoe, I've got the 12vbss in .308 with the lam stock and it shoots 10rd thumbnail groups with my loads @ 125yds. For the money you can't go wrong. To get the best out of it, spend at least as much on the scope as the rifle. You can get all sorts of after market stocks and with a little load development these things really shoot. I'm in MD too, where do you shoot? kyleleague@ yahoo.com

Howdy Blaine. Thanx ya did the hide in a salt and alum soloution. It is kind of a pain ( fleshing) one thing that made it easier was i use hack saw blades bend them in a 1/2 circle and screwed them to a small piece of wood for a hand hold it works pretty good for fleshing and you can't cut into the hide

Now you tell me how to make a good fleshing tool !!!! At least I will be ready next year. Off to the garage to look for a blade and shape a handle.
Thanks for the tip. Also glad to see that you got the rifle you wanted. Let me know how it shoots.
