what range/distance to you intend to be shooting to???
that will give you two parts of your equation the other being "elk sized"
1.25" is not to be sneezed at..thats a fine 3-400yard kill shot in anyones book. |
Ideally, all shots would be within 200 yqards. But now having hunted here this past season, I realize that 300-400 yard shots are not all that uncommon.
Am I ready for this??
Hell NO!! I had to pass on a couple shots this past year because I just didn't feel right.
But I would like to eventually get there, and intend to practice this year out to 500 once I get everything set up.

Please remember, I moved from a shotgun-only state where a 100 yard shot is considered long, Even though my equipment was capable, you just don't normally get a chance at a deer in Ohio at much longer range.

Why do you need a .300 Win Mag for that? Those are distances I have shot all my elk with using a .270 Win and Hornady GMX or Barnes LRX bullets. I had 34" of penetration with the GMX at 400 yards on one harvest.

mate you will do just fine n dandy
3-400yards is well doable and I believe you wont need a super duper hot load to do it with ease...those 200ish grn pills you were mentioning at a reasonable pace ...not superhot just nice n accurate will have plenty heaps of ooomph to do the bizzo .I will have a squizz what the latest guff on them is and flick you a pm.

My original intent was to work up a load using a Barnes 165 gr TTSX. They seem to be almost impossible to find though. No one around here stocks them (168 grain TSX's are everywhere), but I remember reading somewhere that the 165 TTSX/TSX was developed with the .300 Win Mag in mind. |
The.300 Win Mag was SAMMI'd back when bullets didn't have longer ogives. The 165 TTSX fits the SAMMI COAL. The ogive on the 168 TTSX is longer like more modern bullets. Magazine length in some .300 WM are often longer to accommodate modern low-drag bullets. You might be able to fit the 168 TTSX in your action if your magazine is long enough. The 168 expands slightly better than the 165.

My elk hunting partner uses a .300 Win Mag. He shoots the .223 and 6.8 pretty accurately but when he gets behind the .300 Win Mag he doesn't shoot near as well. The recoil is a challenge for him.

Elvis,
Thanks for the link. There's plenty of interesting reading there.

I have not used a Win mag very often but need to get a load identified for my son to use when he gets home form deployment. I intend to get solid data out to 500 yards but do not plan to shoot 30 at a time... I know it is more fun to work up a load but just asking here...What factory ammo loads would you recommend for Elk? If I can get 6" group at 500 yards with a good bullet in factory ammo .... I think I would call it done..
Edit to add... a quick show 180 gr. TTSX and 200 gr ELD factory loads available. While I am sure both bullets will do the job if properly placed... which would you shoot?
second edit to add.... I looked at muzzle energy of the 178 ELD in 30-06 versus the 200 gr. 300Win mag... 600 foot pounds more ME in the Win mag... I think I will borrow my buddies Win Mag rather than take my -06 like I had planned...

My buddy uses 165 GMX Superformance and meets the accuracy goals you desire. I'm a meat hunter so choose monolithic bullets. The recoil is pretty stout with the Superformance and 165 GMX. He shot an elk at 100 yards head-on and the GMX penetrated the full length and was caught by the rear hide. ELD-X bullets will fragment and likely lose their core.

Did you see the single powder charge velocity ladder I did with the ELD-X? You can save a lot of bullets and time that way.

Are you looking for a factory load? Or have you settled on the 300 factory load with the with the 200 gr ELDX.

I have not tried any factory loads other than the Remington 180Gr PSP to get it on paper.
I have a boat load of once fired Federal brass left on the range by Seal sniper training group at Camp Atterbury. I snagged some Berger 190's on a good price. I have some IMR4350 and 7828SSC and will do the single bullet work up like Slim does.
But for as few rounds as I plan to shoot in this rifle.. If factory ammo shoots sub MOA - that saves me a bunch of work.. and barrel life.

I hunted with Federals 180 gr Trophy Bonded Tip this past season. It shot 1.25" groups from my rifle and that was after a long day at the range. I could probably get it to shoot better if my shoulder hadn't started bothering me.
