Remington 7615 shell stripper

Let us know when you get it and what sort of quality the thing is.
Is it as bad as the original or have they improved it.

My mate picked them up this afternoon. He hasn't said one way or the other so I am assuming that there is no difference in the quality, but I will know more on the weekend.

If it was I who needed a part that breaks easily I would make a pattern of the new part and get some tool steel and make one for next time.

I said the same thing, but this part is not an easy one to make unless you diecast it or make it with a CNC.

It should be right now...we have three pieces...fingers crossed.

I've just had the Cartridge stripper guide snap on me. As a machinist this isn't a huge deal as I can make one easily enough if I have to but Raytrade have stated they will get one for me asap (hope it's soon!). My rifle has only had (I don't keep count really) around 500 rounds through it. This is unacceptable from a modern firearm.

This is unacceptable even on a cheap "no-name" gun and it is worse when it is a "known problem" from Remington. If it was mine I would write Remington and let them know that they could fix it properly or that every social media in the known world would be flooded with their lack of craftsmanship and poor customer service.

I am a big fan of Remington and I would expect immediate action from them. If they, like Colt, are trying to live off their brand name they are losing customer support. I own four Remington firearms and have never had any problems but the way they are (not) responding to this problem has me leaning towards Ruger. Not only do they make great guns but they support their customers.

I hope this is something that they take care of quickly for you.

Paul, I couldn't agree more. We all know the QC issues that Remington have had lately, apparently they are getting better now. I've never been a big Remington fan, but the 76XX series of rifles appeal to me. I did write to Remington regarding this issue and they steered me straight to the Aussie Importer, Raytrade. To their credit Raytrade straight away let me know they had the part and that they would send me one out. When I recieve the replacement part I'll compare it in quality to the original. I think I'll make one from 4140 anyway, just in case this one breaks. I have to say though my confidence in this rifle's reliability certainly has been taken down a peg or two.

I think Raytrade has probably been a little embarrassed by the ongoing supply problems from Remington. We eventually got two Shell Strippers for the 7615 and the quality looks better, but only time will tell. If you are able to machine one up from good quality stock, then go for it mate...at least you will have a part of known quality.

If you make 1, do 2 and put Vince over the barrel, his fridge door opens a bit quicker that way, I'm sure for a reasonable price you would move it.
This particular part looks like its been designed by an engineer and then nibbled to death by bean counters.

I have never seen the part but from the descriptions of its fragility my bet is it is a cast part and they don't want to go to the expense of an investment casting process. I bet that if Gunsmoke wanted to take the time to make a few from 4140 he could make some money selling them either on EBay or through smiths who can't get the cheap part from Remington. There are a lot of after-market suppliers who got their start in just this way.
Charge a $150 setup fee and time and materials for ten multiplied by 1.5 and you know what to charge for each one. Even if it needs to be final fit by a smith it might be worth it to get a reliable part. That is how I figured out how much the anti-flare kit should go for and I sold a lot of them to folks who paid $1200+ for a Ford C-4 high performance automatic transmission. I made a decent profit on the part and could have charged more fore it but it sold well at the computed value and made the transmissions work the way they should. It's too bad that the old 3 speed auto is going the way of the dinosaurs but I still get the occasional call for my kit. You may end up the sole supplier of a part that is in demand too. Do what you feel like - I just wanted to let you know that there are possibilities here.

Go to PAGE 2 of this thread Paul and you will see a pic of the part that I posted. The area where is breaks is easy to see (as is the attempted repair by my mate). Definitely a cast part mate.

It is hard to tell in the photo but it almost looks like an aluminum bronze casting and not steel at all. The way the weld just beaded up either points to an alloy that is incompatible or a really bad welder.

Aluminum bronze is nearly impossible to weld even with the right alloy rod. It's even hard to braze. I have worked with it to make decorative knives and you have to remove stock to work with it because the only way I found to add is with a special epoxy. Is it a light golden/bronze color?

Yep, you got the colour right mate, and the reason for the weld being the way it is is most likely a combination of both your stated reasons mate. Maybe silver solder might have been worth a try, but it can be very finicky as to what it bonds with as well.

Oh well, the new part is working well and seems to be better quality so only time will tell.

I don't think silver solder would work either, it takes a Nickel Aluminum Bronze alloy to braze or weld. It can be furnace, MIG or TIG welded but the alloy has to match the base material closely.

I hope your new part continues to work but I like the idea of a steel part better. Its a flaw of mine, over-engineer and over build. Nobody has ever complained about a part that doesn't fail. (except maybe the stock holders)

Vince and Gunsmoke, I have just had the same part snap on me too. I had only shot around 100 rounds and unlike yourselves, returned the gun to a very well known gun shop in Brisbane for a warranty repair. I have heard a few rumours that it was a part that consistantly broke and was wondering if the new parts are stronger / better?

Hopefully the 1 year warranty on the new part starts from the date the new part was replaced.......
