For all the Navy buffs amongst us, this website is a brilliant record of the building of the USS Arizona in 1914-1915, its subsequent demise in Pearl Harbour and the beginnings of the construction of the memorial.

I would suggest copying all of the photographs if you wish to retain a record of them as I don't know how long they are likely to last in the particular Forum in which they are posted.

Great article and photos.
I visited the Arizona memorial back in 1982, a very moving experience.

My shooting buddy visited the Arizona Memorial and said it is very sobering. One day I would love to visit as well...would give me a chance to see the Mighty Mo again. When she visited Stdney back in the 80s I was lucky enough to get a hat from one of the sailors.

Rotated the camera when i took it... certain viewers auto correct it. I just manually rotated it and saved it back out. Here's some more from the memorial I took

Yellow flowers visible on the oil leaking from it,

MMMM,
when did you rat through my photo collection Dallan?
33 years later I have at least 2 of those exact shots, except mine doesnt have the bridge in the background, they still used the "small boat" to get to ford island.
And the old girl is STILL leaking oil.

LOL

Apparently there is a tremendous amount of oil still left inside it:

Quote::
Currently, the ship leaks 2-9 quarts each day. The USS Arizona held approximately 1.5 million gallons (5.7 million liters) of “Bunker-C” oil. The ship burned for 2½ days leaving an unspecified amount of oil onboard.[i]

Don't know why the pic is rotated mate...when your "view" the pic it is right way round.

Yeah, my goatee is starting to get a little scruffy, but I want it to grow long enough to plait...for a laugh of course.

Those pics are awesome Dallan...I would love to visit the Arizona Memorial one day. They say the most poignant and moving time to be on the Memorial is when they lay an old sailor to rest in the hull, especially one of Arizona's old sailors.

The oil that is leaking, the “Bunker-C” oil...is that propulsion oil for the engines or oil for another purpose?

Bunker oil for the engines .
Although you can bet theres a lot of hydraulic and lube oil still seeping out.
I doubt they did a lot of internal work on her, they just removed the superstructure and declared her a war grave.

I use to go by her in the ships motor whale boat and on the liberty boats that ran between pier Bravo and Ford Island from 1965 through 1968.

I believe (if memory serves) that only those Sailors that were aboard the USS Arizona and survived are allowed to be interned in her.

The USS Iowa is equipped with nine 16-inch (406mm) guns that could fire nuclear shells—the only American ship in history with this capability.
