I'm not up for barbequing things.

But a video, is a good idea. I'll make sure I set one up. Got a firing pin yesterday from a bolt action. Now to rig up a dowel to slide in and out of the reciever.

it makes you wonder how clever black people are in Africa, they only need a nail and some rubber band to make a round go boom... and they even claim that the bullet goes in a desired direction...

compared to this thread: does anyone dare to guess how many schoolyears (and experience) are together discussing this item in this thread?

What you are saying is that all slimjim has to do is get a hammer and a nail. Right?

I have to be honnest: I would first take the cleaning rod out (and don't tell me that it's not possible. What goes in will always come out, maybe in another shape but at the end it will always cooperate, just show it who's the boss...)

How much short of being fully chambered are you?

I still think that threading the end of the rod and installing a washer and a nut and wrench it against the muzzle would dislodge the rod.

Ok, ok! I get it, you want entertainment.

Well here is the likely reason my test fixture failed to ignite the primer, The screw i used was so light it didn't measure weight on this scale. The picture shows it compared to the firing pin from a Remington 700 which wieght 1 5/8 oz. I will use this in round two.

I'm hesitant to pull the steel cleaning rod out because, if it did launch from the barrel, it wouldn't be going far. But since several of you think that is the best idea. I tried. After several attempts I was successful, but not as I expected.

First, I didn't have any nuts the fit the threads of the rod. It was too thick for a 10-32 and just a bit to thin for a 1/4-20. The 1/4-20 did bite into the rod but would not hold when torque was applied to pull the bullet forward/extract the rod. Even with multiple nuts it wouldn't hold so I clamped on a vice grip. which held.

using the barrel threads/muzzle brake I backed the rod out until there was a significant torque increase. The bullet was pushed into the case this much if not more (see gap in the picture). When I tightened everything up from here, the rod just snapped. I found the end of the rod that had mechanically locked to the bullet, flared about 0.010", the first rod of threads missing, and half of the second row which still must be embedded in the copper jacket of the 77gr SMK.

I think it must be a big nail.

those are just rumors Embarassed Embarassed

I do think a candle flame to set off primer would be relatively simple to set up
east to test if it will work.

Dawgdad, the BDG was a 1/4 inch aft of the upper receiver. A 275 lb guy used the forward assist to try and close the bolt without success. Maybe one of the reasons why I couldn't drive the cartridge out with the cleaning rod. With any round that I've had not chamber completely, I've never found the forward assist helped, in fact, I think it made matters worse.

So are you thinking I could press the BCG forward or hammer it into battery? If I did do this and then assembled the gun and tired to fire it, I would have these questions. Prefaced by I'm not sure I would want to be standing next to it when it went off.

1. Would the deformed bullet now with steel fragments from the cleaning rod not go down the barrel correctly or cause too much friction - adding to a chamber pressure over max?

2. Would the compressed powder column, now very compressed, burn faster causing excessive chamber pressure?

3. Wouldn't the fun be lost in trying to set this case off using these alternative methods - gee, if kids in Africa can do it with nails and rubber bands, come on?

Getting there Slim, slowly, but getting there. Have you been able to ascertain how much steel is left with the projectile mate?

I don't think I would be bothered with trying to fully chamber the round, unless it is such a small amount to move into battery and it can be safely achieved. Take a step back mate, put some serious thought into the whole shebang and decide which way is the best and safest route. I'm starting to think that maybe you have, maybe subconsciously, written off the barrel. If this is the case mate, maybe a drill bit through the chamber and case to drain the powder and make everything safe is the best option.

If you opt to go with trying to detonate the round, I don't think the weight if the "firing pin" is an issue, it is the force driving it that will be the factor to be considered. A swinging HEAVY hammer would suffice, or a .22 rimfire fired from close enough to deliver good force.

Wish I was there with you mate...I have a mental pic of what would be suitable to achieve the aim...no pun intended.
