good point slim I would go up in weight in the 7mm08 to reduce meat damage. kind of like the 110 vs 130 grn .270 question.

Marty, Just so you understand......... I wouldn't hesitate to take my 221FB on a whitetail hunt if it was the only rifle I had !!!

A bullet in the head or through the lungs........ neither is hard to accomplish on a whitetail.

how would you go with a 25/06??? that would be easier to get ,you would have more options and ammo would be easier to find if needed.

Slim,
I simply believe 85-100gr bullets traveling 3,000fps are more than adequate to create an instantaneous humane kill.
I have witnessed this on several occasions over the years and have seen the damage with my own eyes.

This is nearly 30 years of experience and knowledge telling me what some people never figure out.

It's nothing more than I want a .250AI and I need not worry about it getting the job done........as long as I do my part !!!

Elvis, you got no idea how many times I've thought about how much easier that would be.

I carry a 30-06 for a back up gun......... most times I wouldn't need to leave camp if I needed ammo !!!

Just for the record I've never left home without ammo.............. or the bolt Laughing

Ive left the sleeping bag at home TWICE
my boots once (funny as heck hunting in smooth soled shoes)
my pig dog who was a great finder both air and ground scent
matches/lighter after giving up smoking
ok so the 25/06 is too close to what you have so how about a shorter action in .260 remington or two for free( I cant believe Im suggesting this)
you could get the chamber reemed out to ackley improved ifn you want to be fancy...

I've always thought the .260 or 7mm-08 were excellent deer rifles and best in the .308 Win case family. I know you probably have the best rifles on the forum. Lots of money just to step down a little.

I'm trying to figure out what my next AR build will be. Based on your comment, it should be a 6.8mm SPC firing the 85gr and 95gr Barnes bullets.

Thanks for the compliment but I don't think I'd agree !!!

Your probably gonna need more than a standard length AR barrel to achieve 3000 + fps
Why not just go with the AR10 platform and use a standard short action cartridge ???

Had a pre-64 m70 win 270 re-barreled with a badger barrel installed 3 years ago by local smith. Price was $475 back then.

Yes I was very happy with it, some how my 2nd oldest talked me into giving it to him 2 years ago for an X-mas gift. The local smith that did the re-barreling retired last year at 88 years old. His brother now runs it and is just about as good as John was. He took his time in doing it (5 weeks) and did a super job lapping the bolt face, etc. Thats the one thing I miss is the mom & pop smiths around here, there is only one left now and once in awhile on Saturdays I head down to his place and shoot the bull about what was happening in the firearms world.

But Ray isn't a spry kitten either, he's 81.
