Tomorrow will be 67 years ..

Spent over 21 years in the Navy , and the highlight of my career was being on the Honor Guard in 1983 ..

Sacred and Hallowed Ground .. Have an eerie feeling when you're there ..

GroovyJack,
I was thinking about the date. We have a Battle of the Bulge rifle match tomorrow and we will have a moment of silence for those fallen folks on December 7. 1941. All the best...

Jack,

I think he does not know the historical date of December 7th (Not surprising most Canadian's I know don't know the date of the event itself), I think he thought you were referring to your birthday.

67 years have past but people must not forget the day's events nor the years of hardship endured by the "greatest generation" to keep us free.

Dimitri is right Jack, he thought that it was your birthday.

I'm sorry to say Dimitri, a lot of kids this side of the border don't seem to know the date either.

My Dad was in the Navy during the War, and said that the Harbor was a real mess when his ship steamed into Pearl, and I think that was in '43.

Eric,

I realize that but its a shame, December 7th should be embedded in every American kids mind, as should June 6th 1944 be something on EVERY kids mind in North America and Europe who has not known oppression and mass murder due to the people who put our freedoms ahead of their own lives many of which are our parents, grandparents and even great grandparents.

In Canada, our history books in schools, more or less (from what I have seen) go from September 10th 1939 to August 19th 1942 when our largest loss happened.

I would hate to see the same happen when I have grandchildren of my own and their generation does not know what 9/11 was and what it meant.

You are spot on, once again Dimitri.

Judy and I make sure that our kids know when, what for, and who sacrificed for Freedom.

Just today, I was watching the History Channel, and they had an hour show on President Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.
I can recite, even now, the entire Address, because I learned it in school.
I think that most adults have no idea anymore what the words were, and what they actually meant.

That documentary should be required viewing in schools today, but I will bet you anything, that if I brought this up to our School Board, and they are very conservative, I would be laughed off the podium.

I believe that a good part of the mess that we are in today is because most folks are ignorant on our History.

Its' pretty sad.

When my daughter studied WW2 history in high school she was taught how many women and minorities served, etc. but was never taught what countries were fighting or why!?!?! No wonder the kids don't understand the importance of history.

Eric,

When I have kids only 5 channels will be unblocked (Fox News, Teletoon Retro, History, Discovery, and CMT) if the kids don't like it too bad. Laughing

Mike,

And in the future when we and others are doomed to repeat history they will wonder why it happened all over again.

This is part of the reason our society as a whole is falling apart in my opinion. People cannot see what life is about, and just how special it is.

We do not enjoy sitting here in North America a relatively peaceful life because the world is a wonderful place. Many people have lost their lives throughout the years and even today to give us all the ability, to sit on the couch all day, getting fat by eating Big Mac's, watching stupid "reality" shows and then have the ability to go down to the street corner and protest that the government is "putting the man down". Rolling Eyes

If just half the people who moan and grown about the world today, realized why we are so lucky to be living where we are, to be living without oppression from the muzzle end of a gun, and to be able to walk to the kitchen and find food and running water, not stale bread crumbs and a wall missing from a bomb. The world would be a better place.

All of this is just my opinion others may think differently.

Dimitri

Forgive and forget?
forgive I think not
forget NEVER.
We sure do take our freedom for granted the younger generations have no idea of the sacrefices that have been made.

The attack on Pearl Harbour was a terrible and under-handed deception on the part of the Japanese.

The are accepted in pretty much every country today and are now a very large part of the worldwide economy. However, I don't believe that they really paid for their dirty, lowdown, under-handed, sneaky and murderous tactics during WW II.

As Elvis says...forgive, not bloody likely...forget, NEVER. I would add, don't get mad, get even. It may take 5 generations...but the time will come. Payback can be a real bit#h.

Cheers, Vince

We've got a generation that were not taught (unless they taught themselves) accurate history, nor the importance of history. It's really a shame, because this in part is were patriotism is formed. History and Civics are not emphasized enough in the classroom.

I agree with Elvis and Vince, there are just some things that you should never forget and pardon us if we never forget. I spent two years in Vietnam and I can truthfully say that I will never forget nor forgive the Viet Cong, North Vietnam, nor the Chinese. I've yet to hear anything from them that would warrant my forgiveness. They should be thankful that US Military was stopped by our government from unleashing holy hell upon them.

I forgot about you Aussies.
You guys were right in the cross hairs of the Rising Sun.
I bet you two could tell stories from your Dads that would make our hair stand on end.

Cary, what you said is exactly why I really didn't trust John McCain very much.
How can a guy go through what he did, and then kiss and make up??
I have never met a Veteran who, after the War, loved the rotten scoundrels who they fought against.
