RE: Vermejo Park Ranch PVA Elk Hunt, December 7-12, 2011

DATE: October 17, 2011

This is to announce the Seventh Annual Vermejo Park Ranch/PVA Elk Hunt. This year, six PVA members will be given the opportunity to experience a quality cow elk hunt.

The Seventh Annual Vermejo Park Ranch/PVA Elk Hunt will take place on the famous Vermejo Park Ranch during the dates of December 7-12, 2011. Most of the elk are harvested on the first hunting day (weather permitting). An additional two days are included to allow for sighting-in your hunting rifle and to obtain any last-minute hunting supplies, or in case of severe weather and also to allow time to process the meat. The scenic and vast Vermejo Park Ranch sprawls across over 600,000 acres of breathtaking mountain and valley terrain and has one of the largest and best managed elk herds in the world. The hunt takes place at high altitude; harsh weather can be a concern.

We generally hunt from four-wheel drive, club cab pick-up trucks. Hunting days will begin before daylight and could end after dark. This is an exciting but demanding hunt. Elk are big animals, 500 lbs. plus, and tough. You must be proficient with a hunting rifle, as shots may be at a distance of 250 to over 300 meters, and it’s recommended that a hunting rifle with a caliber of .270 and up is utilized. If selected to participate, plan on going to a rifle range to practice and accurately sight in your scoped rifle (due to weather and altitude). Selected applicants will be provided with a form to have completed by a physician, and will not be allowed to participate prior to obtaining this clearance.

You must act quickly to apply for this hunt. The six PVA participants will be selected by random drawing from among all of the completed applications that are received by the cut off date. Please distribute this application to your interested members as soon as possible. Feel free to make additional copies if you need them. I will need to have received applications by November 14, 2011 in order for them to be considered. You can either mail or fax (202-416-7639) the application to Mary Hobbs’ attention. Please call me at 800-424-8200 , x620, after mailing or faxing, to verify that I have received it.

A brief overview of the Vermejo Ranch PVA Elk Hunt:
Six PVA members will be provided with lodging, guide, and license fees.
All attendees are responsible for their own food costs; i.e., stocking the cabin’s refrigerator.
Hunters must provide their own transportation to and from the hunt (Raton, NM).
Hunters are responsible for their own travel expenses to and from the hunt.
Hunters are responsible for the processing and shipment of their elk meat (cost is usually around $250).
Hunters must sign a standard PVA liability release form.
The individuals chosen to participate will be notified the week of November 14, 2011.

Homer S. Townsend, Jr., Executive Director
Andy Krieger, Director of Sports and Recreation

It is great to see the change in attitude from the returning Vietnam vets to today's vets.

God bless all who stand up for our veterans.
