This does not bode well for firearms owners. The way I see it, there is no argument about rights to own a handgun being infringed... It's just that you will have to pay a motza for the gun and watch if you want one. No doubt the ANTIs will lobby to have similar technology retro fitted to existing firearms "if you wish to own a firearm".

To the topic.
I bet you within two months after the guns are available, the security cutoff will be hacked and breached.
Its only good security for the morons, wont stop smarter crims.

Exactly Geland and what about the non-secure guns we already own? Turn them in? Don't think that'll happen. Making ammo scarce and guns too expensive and ridiculous to own, seems to rock their world. In an emergency when you need the gun, you may as well have it in a safe, it's not always going to be ready to fire and people are going to wake up dead if they rely on this as self defense. What keeps someone from taking the thing apart and rigging it back to a normal gun? If you can't take it apart, it's another accident waiting to happen. POS if you ask me.

If the thing is activated remotely (from the watch) it can be DEACTIVATED remotely also. How long would it take someone (like maybe an oppressive government, besides a crook) to figure out how to override the owner's signal? I'll never own one.

IMHO
To make it to go bang every time it will take not more than 24 hours with 100% cosmetic preserved, or 30 minutes with no care of cosmetic.
You simply open the gun and remove the blocking device, and add whatever needed to make it work.

To make it NOT to go bang, from a good distance away (3 - 7 meters) should be doable within 24 hours, 10 - 25 meters would need at least 2 months.
Near field RF can be jammed quite easily with white noise, and with jamming, the signal would not pass from the watch to the gun.
Far RF field would need higher power directional jammer, this might be a bit more to design.

I think the idea of the lock is 100% flop.

$1300 for a $400 handgun IF it is accurate and IF it will continue to work for the 50 - 100 years that most handguns last. We are supposed to pay twice as much for the safety feature than we do for a comparable gun? Really?

Why would anyone think that they could sell such a product in a market that is ripe with good solid guns at a third of the price? When the go out of business what then? If the guns are no longer available do we get to go back to real guns?

Let the police and military test them out if they are such a good idea.....

I can see it now:

cop, "hold it for a second, I have to re-enter my code because I have been on duty for more than eight hours."

What a STUPID idea!

Or better yet: "darn it I broke my watch - now my gun won't work...."

With upwards of 200 million "dumb" handguns already in the US, this will do absolutely NOTHING to reduce crime rates.
It could lead to more violent crime where owners of this joke are tortured for the code needed to go with the gun.

[Tinfoil Hat] How long before the NSA has a "backdoor" code that can disable ALL these so-called "smart" guns?[/Tinfoil Hat]
