Shooting incidents like the one in Oregon teach us several lessons:

1 – The news media will immediately descend on the scene like flies on poop and start spewing out massive amounts of misinformation at lightning speed. When the actual facts come out later they will have lost interest in the story and not share the truth with the enthusiasm that they shared the lies.

2 – The folks who get their news from Facebook memes and a few headlines will immediately have a massive knee-jerk reaction to the misinformation and scream for some sort of action. When the actual facts come out later they will ignore them because they’ve already committed to the lies.

3 – The anti-gun folks will immediately ignore every other issue with the incident and demand that we disarm and punish the people who had nothing to do with it. When the actual facts come out they will ignore them because they are fixated on the thought that “guns are bad”.

4 – The politicians seeking more power will immediately call for disarming the people who had nothing to do with it because defenseless people are easier to control. When the actual facts come out they will ignore them because they want control, not solutions.

Well stated Pumpkinslinger.
What should really happen is to do away with gun-free zones. Allow those who carry to carry and defend those who want to believe that guns are bad. Then they will complain that they didn't get the opportunity to get shot. The press and the rest of them can say that the would-be mass killer was murdered by a by-stander carrying an assault pistol.

It's always the same Punkin. Journalists never let the truth get in the way of a good story. Then there is the 'agenda driven' reporting where the ANTIs make use of their contacts within the media.

Sad, but true.

Well...from the standpoint of bein there....I started watching the news at noon on that day and the local news didn't have much information but the national news did. I found it surprising that the local news (3 stations) had boots on the ground but were either miss-informed or uninformed. Local news said 10 dead, shooter in custody and up to 20 injured. One guy started to say something about the shooter's Facebook page (even though they didn't know his name) and then his broadcast was cut off.

Always been a matter of wait for a while till you spew the facts, but the early reports are always going to be variable, random guesses sometimes (even from the police). Don't know the hows and whys of the national news getting better early information but the local news held to their guns even until that night (when the national news was more accurate). Maybe just not aggressive enough in questioning.

Connecticut Senators Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy announced new legislation (the very next day) for background checks. Might be interesting to them that all the guns this guy had were legally bought (with background checks).

Something to note that I haven't heard much about is this guy's computer record of hating organized religion and his asking his victims what religion they were. Not any terrorism questions despite his computer browsings of pro-Irish Republican Army propaganda and his admiration of Roanoke shooter Vester Flanagan. Seems to me there was some Islamic guy
Mahmoud Ali Ehsani on his Facebook page too. Along with many photos of Jihadist actions all over the world.....no wait we need gun control, just ask the President (he seems pretty perturbed right now). Yea we should focus on that and keep the Muslims safe from prejudice.

The quick-step knee-jerk to gun control will keep the Republicans screaming and the Senators busy but (whew...wipe my brow) the Muslims will safe.

I do not believe that we will ever know the full truth. What will be publicized will be what the Government/media wants us to believe, what fits their agenda.

On the one hand yes, the solicitous media rushes in like blood thirsty vultures to get the greatest number of viewers, why because that's how they make money, sad isn't it. However, we probably hear what is closest to the truth about the perpetrator during those early hours before what transpired has become history and can be rewritten to accommodate what our leaders want it to be.

I am sure all the biased comments that will follow on both sides will be comforting to the families. May yet another group of innocent people rest in peace. Perhaps if we spent more time thinking about the victims rather than the killer or our own interests more somber reflection would result.

The access to deadly tools isn't the real problem, although it makes multiple homicide much easier. It is the propensity to resort to violence to solve personal and interpersonal issues that is pervasive in our world. I fear it will only get worse before it gets better.

And also that the would-be mass killer was bipolar and had been abused a child so it wasn't his fault.

Had a gent defend himself here this weekend from another gent who followed him into a Home Depot parking lot, blocked his vehicle from behind then started punching him in the face. The local produced a firearm and killed the assailant. The local was released after questioning.

If someone follows me into a parking lot, blocks my exit, gets out of his rig and walk over to mine?

Better have way more rounds than me.

This incident was not a shooting, it's self defense. Shooting is what you do to prepare for self defense.

Az. is a right to carry state, no CCW required for legal residents. People are polite to each other up here. Liberals get weeded out pretty quick.

*

"The shooting took place in the Payson Home Depot parking lot. Officers responded to a call informing them Annabel had been shot. The alleged shooter is Robert Schmidt, Payson PD said in a press release.

When they arrived, Payson PD said they questioned Schmidt, but released him after determining he may have acted in self-defense. Payson PD reports the investigation is still ongoing in conjunction with the Gila County Attorney's Office."
