I used to do some rock climbing and viewing this video reminded me of why I quit. I was getting this feeling in my stomach, just like rock climbing. Heights didn't used to bother me until I decided to climb alone one time. Your mind is too busy freeking you out to enjoy it and actually I got to the point where I would panic and freeze from fear. When you climb alone there's no-one there to save you, you have to fight through it and literally kiss your arse goodbye before you have the power to get back down or keep going up. You have to tell yourself it's ok if I die, because if you can't convince yourself, you end up frozen there till you drop from exhaustion and that's sure death. You have to take the chance and go for it, even though you're sure it's all over for you. Tough thing to do, for me anyway. I had a friend I used to free climb with and he ended up falling about 70 ft. once, he hit 3 ledges on the way down and ended up on a pile of rocks on his back. He lived through it but that was his last climb. I think that was the last time I did any climbing too, well I did one climb when I was in the Navy but that was at least over water. No ropes or other gear and it was very crumbly but up there overlooking the ocean was a great place to have a bottle of wine. Don't know how we managed to come back from that unscathed but we didn't really care. My friend was getting a discharge (she was practically deaf) and we threw caution to the wind many times.

I thought I caught a mistake in the video when he said that they had to watch for bad weather because there was no quick way down. Then I realized that falling from that height wouldn't really be quick.
Damn, Suz, your description of rock climbing had my stomach upside-down and my knees shaking. Guess I'm not ready to die just yet. Heights - I won't even hunt from a tree stand. Made me pretty nervous, though, when a black bear that was just a bit too small to shoot bluff-charged to within 10 feet. That still wasn't as scary as being in a tree stand.
Nope, no heights for me.

Well, I used to have a real problem with acrophobia - an irrational fear of falling. I didn't complete the video. I thought I was pretty much over my acrophobia but that was ... uncomfortable to say the least.
I am a bit relieved that others had their stomachs doing flip-flops because maybe I am more or less over the acrophobia and it is natural to have the level of fear that I now have.
There are two things wrong with that tower.
1. it is over three stories high
2. there isn't an elevator
It didn't look like there was any way for the climber to hook up his safety harness while climbing - isn't that an OSHA requirement?

Elevator? Yes there was...For the first several hundred feet or more. after that you were on your own. As far as OSHA is concerned if we had a OSHA rule on every thing we do we wouldn't get anything done. Besides. I betthey are like us. Too afraid to climb up there to inspect.
Sooo...That's my problem..."acrophobia".
I figured that wwhhooooossshhSplat was everyone's fear...
Sorry...Bad joke.
