We have very few native ringnecks in Pennsylvania these days. if you want to hunt the long-tailed bird it means you have to hunt stocked birds. For a lot of years I have hunted on a regulated shooting ground in the central part of the state. The place is fantastic because they put the birds out and leave them in the fields and woods. They lose some birds to foxes, hawks and coyotes, but the bird act wild. The generally use English Springer Spaniels to flush the birds and the hunts are a real experience. I have introduced some friends to this place and they keep going back. As luck would have it, we have three hunts booked for November. I may die from a heart attack and die happy. Take care...
Joe.

I ll be 75 years old this year when I go out upland bird hunting with my German shorthair. All are wild birds where I live but there ls not the bird population like in the 80s. The season starts the last week end in Oct. Dont plan on going with a heart attack yet.

Joe,
Do you need any more hunters in your groups? All the best...
Gil

One of the few pluses of being on this side of the pond is the number of pheasants "our in the wild" so to speak. Cost of shooting them is the cost of the cartridge to me - unless I go on a "rough shoot" on one of the estates north of the border.
I'll never shoot "driven game" as I have an aversion to birds being used purely as targets (many places bury the results of a day's shoot. Mad ).
All pheasants started as imports here but they have settled in quite nicely & provide something tastier than pigeon when one turns up on the farms I shoot on.

When I was in Scottland the year before last, I couldn't believe the number of pheasants that covered the fields and roadways!!! There was too many to believe. There would easily be 150+ birds in the field and some areas of the roadway were littered with dead pheasant hit by cars. I'm talking a dozen pheasant every 100 feet.

you didn't need a shotgun! You could have hunted them successfully with a sling-shot!!
