Gil,

What do you do with them?

Just curious...

I have never had to deprime live primers so they never got recycled. If I wanted to kill them, I would merely run primed cases through the firearm and pop them off.

If I had deprimed live primers to dispose of, I would dump them down a local well.

All the best...
Gil

I agree with Gil. Never would reuse deprimed live primers for any reason. Take care...

Hummm...Interesting. I have on many occasions. Never had a problem.

Primers are so resilient and tough that I have crushed them sideways and out of curiosity checked by loading the case in a gun and even in sideways and crushed flat have went off.

Have or had a discussion on THR this week on seating primers. To prove a point I installed a primer in a .38 Special case and forced it as far as my Lee Auto Prime II could crush it. I seated it .012" below flush with the case head. Loaded in my S&W Mod 1o. Guess what? That's right...It went off and gave me a 0ne foot flame out the muzzle.

Remove them and reseat them. Conserve primers. They are hard to get...

Agree, when installed in a cartridge, the primer is better sealed and protected then when sitting in package tray. I've had no problem with reuse.

Joe,

If you HAD to decap live primers...how would you dispose of them?

Again...just curious.

No problem. I would put decapped live primers in a tin can and cover them with some motor oil and let them sit a few days. Then put them in the trash. I also have an old well and might dump the down it. Take care...

Disposal- wrap in wet newspaper, seal in bag, toss or bury.

And to mirror Bushy- I've experimented with primers and man, they LOVE to go bang, even the mangled ones! Matter of fact, I think of all the ones I've loaded this past couple years I've had no duds than I can think of! Had some factory and range reload duds though... but Magtech, CCI and Remington always go bang from the side, back, front, etc... all they need is a sharp shock/blow, from anyside!

Had one LPP flip over sidewawys in my press last week- guess what, the neighbor came over to see if I was ok. *BANG!*

Handle with care!

wtf I'm with bushy on this one Save your primers-at least until this goofy market(economy) takes an upswing! If you have to dispose of them do it in an old burning barrel with some flammable material and a match-no contamination of ground water in somebody elses well that way! Shocked

I have removed a few over the years and reused them and have had no problems at all. They all fired perfectly.

I am just starting to get into reloading, but is there any danger when you remove the live primers in the same way you remove the fired ones?

No problem pushing the primers out using your resizing/decapping die. To get a primer to go off you have tho give it a SHARP blow with something. Just pushing it out won't set it off. I still would advise wearing safety glasses anytime you are reloading...

And a hearty welcome to this fine site. Get a beer from Vince's stash, pull up a stump close to the fire and join right in...

Welcome aboard the Nut train MPerry...as Bushy said, grab a beer mate and join in.

De-capping a live primer is exactly the same as de-capping a spent one...but I ALWAYS go gently when taking out a live one...and wear safety glasses.

Cheers, Vince
