With Pro custom Oil it is not necessary to use any other sealer, it is the sealer and finish in one can. Pro custom will darken the wood. To find out how much, apply a little to a spot inside the grip. When wet, see if the spot is as dark as you wish. After three coats the grip will be the color of the wet spot when the oil dries.

If the grip is still too light for you, go to a hardware store and buy a small can of Min Wax special walnut stain and a can of dark walnut stain. Rub the oil stain into the wood with a rag until you get a shade just barely lighter than you want and allow the stain to dry one week. Then proceed to apply the Pro Custom Oil. Note, the PC oil will darken the stained wood.

If you want to fill the pores after you apply the 3 coat sealer, use 300 grit wet and dry paper. Wet the paper with PCO and sand it into the pores using the wet wood fiber to fill the pores. When tacky, wipe the fiber and PCO mixture across the grain. The sanded finish when filled and dry after being applied 3 or 4 times, will begain to resemble polished stone.

assuming that you've sanded and raised the grain already working up to 400 grit spending alot of time with the 200 to get out those pesky little scratches that show up when you wet it. Use the tung oil to get a good base coat let it dry a week then go back with thinned tung oil that is about 1 part oil to 2 parts thinner and use it for a wet sanding medium using 600 grit in the same motion used to spit shine dont wipe off the slurry created just let it settle in the grain let this set until completely dry and repeat the combination of the fine dust and dried oil makes a very durable finish. in the glare you'll eventually fill all the grain til its dead level flat.

One trick that I use is to seal all interior surfaces with polyurethane, being very careful not to get it on any surface that I intend to use an oil finish on. This would include barrel channels and action areas, insides of grips, under butt plates and recoil pads and etc. This works especially well on two-piece stocks such as lever guns and single-shots like Ruger #1s. It affords superior protection and is tough.

SSL, that is a good idea! I'm getting ready to refinish some old grips I bought to restore a S&W Victory Model to its original configuration so I am appreciating this info!

I looked at all my usual haunts for some Brownell's Pro Oil but there is none to be found around here so I decided to go with the Tru Oil. I already stained them a couple days ago and put the first coat of oil on tonight. If I can follow your instructions and make these grips come out nice I will refinish my S&W 1500 I put a custom stock on probably 25 years ago and was never absolutely happy with the finish. It has a very nice piece of wood. One project at a time.

I figured that out the hard way. They wanted 12 bucks shipping just for the finish. I'll wait until until I need some other goodies to. I just got done with the first wet sanding and must say looks good so far.

Be careful with that refinishing job Mr. Wiersy.

If you don't get it just right, it will affect your ability to control that monster- forever!

As a matter of fact now that I think of it, you should just send the whole giant yummy hunk of stainless to me for a lentghy testing and inspection, ya know, just to be on the safe side. Very Happy

Hey Wiersy111 that same recipe I posted for tung oil works with tru-oil but the ratio is 1-1.

What you think I won't show 'em off when I get done? You should know better then that. I'm having a hard time getting rid of the rubbing marks. Any tips???
