While replying to a post in "Handgun Hunting" i decided to ask an officer friend of mine about me carrying my 'hunting weapon' in the woods along with my 'defense weapon', and am i breaking the current law of Firearm Deer Season Regulations?

So with him calling me back i gathered this........He nor the DNR know through the current hunting, and by the current laws of a concealed weapon holder that i am commiting a crime. Confused Although, i was also told IF the CO is having a bad day, i 'could' be sited for failure to comply with current capacity laws BECAUSE that is one of those "Grey Areas" in law! wtf
And while not being higher than the law, an officer can be sited for the same as well because i asked if he does, and jokingly he said; well yeah....how do you expect me to hold up my pants, i carry in an IWB holster when i'm off duty, and my pants would fall down if i didn't! Laughing

What do you guys think of this especially if you were only able catch a few hours of hunting from work or before work?

I carry my S&W 640 .357 all day every day (in state) hunting or not. I figure theres a greater chance I will need it than there is of a conservation officer patting me down.I am not sure but it seems to me that a CC license from a state should be above game laws, but I guess every state is different.

Ok, this is somewhat off subject, although related in the way of another arey area i guess, and is one thing that gets me about bow season........

Pg. 161 of the Firearms Laws Of Michigan
A person licensed to carry a concealed pistol is subject to the rules, regulations, and orders of the Department of Natural Resources regulating the possession of firearms and may not posses or carry a pistol while hunting deer during "bow and arrow only" hunting season, unless the person is licensed to hunt deer with a firearm and is hunting in an area open to firearm deer hunting.

This is as of written in the hunting regulations hand book issued by the Mi DNR.......
Archery Deer Seasons
During the archery deer seasons, it is illegal to carry afield a pistol, revolver or other firearm while bow hunting for deer. Exceptions: This prohibition does not apply to pistols carried under authority of a concealed pistol license or properly carried under authority of a specific exception from the requirement of a concealed pistol license. This does not authorize the individual to use the pistol to take game except as provided by law. During special antlerless firearm deer seasons, a firearm hunter may carry afield a bow and arrow or firearm..

Contradictory don't you think! Confused

Here in GA, while hunting the regulations specify legal hunting weapons and in some cases prohibit handguns while hunting ie. no handguns during archery or primitive weapons hunts. While hunting only approved handguns may be carried into the field. There are caliber and barrel length restrictions. Those are some of the things you need to check into before hunting with any handgun. CYOA and don't take chances of being charged with a firearms violation. When conducting a hunting activity the game regulations apply regardless of concealed carry law. Most states have prohibitions on where you can carry concealed anyhow and the language is broad.

While buying my .17HMR this past year the gun dept guy told me that here in Utah if you have a CCW permit, you can legally carry a pistol while bow hunting. I was extremely surprised to hear that... I personally would double check it it though before I carried a firearm on a primative weapons hunt.

Why would you want to carry a concealed weapon when hunting...Everyone in the woods (back east) or in the mountains (out west) already know you are armed...What's the point. I usually have my rifles and one S&W mod 19 2 1/2" combat magnum with me. The revolver never leaves my side and it is in the open and has stopped several incidents just by it's EXPOSED presence. To have hidden it would have caused an escalation of the situation. Because they see the weapon on my side they think twice about trying anything...

Bow hunting in Grizzly territory? Worry about theft / Robbery? I've read no less than 8 storys from people this fall alone where their harvests were stolen. There were 2 bow hunters murdered in AZ last year too during the bow hunt.

Just because you have CCW doesnt mean you have to keep it hidden. I only mentioned CCW as a reason to be able to potentially carry while bow hunting. I dont see a whole lot of need to carry a pistol during the rifle hunt... unless it has snake shot or something in it Smile

Well and to be quite honest with you....I carry in an inner waist band (IWB) holster that normally, you buy pants a size or two bigger in the waist (and gunbelt accordingly as well). Since having this, if i don't carry or have my holster on....my pants tend to resemble the ICB.....Inner city boys. Cool

DallanC..Not too many years ago my friend and I were in camp that we had just set up (High Sierras) and were preparing our evening meal. We had put our rifles away unloaded and inspected as we should. While crouched over our prespective cook fires (we both cook over very small fires) three burly fellows (I weigh in at a whoppin' 155. These guys needed a shave all over) charged into camp and informed us that we had taken their camp site. As we stood up and turned in their direction they noticed both of our Mod 19s at our side. Quote "But we can wait until you leave". We were there 10 days and saw no sign of them again...This is not one incident that I have had here in california, but one of several. My friend, Mr. Smith and Mr. Wesson, have never let me down...I will carry it openly...

Specific to bow hunting: in Arizona the Game & Fish has sought comment from sporting organizations and clubs regarding the carrying of sidearms during the hunt. My opinion is that it will be clarified by G&F and allowed.

While guiding I sometimes have clients that wish to carry a handgun (and often a knife with a 7" or longer blade) in addition to their rifle. I am sure there are stories where such items came in handy but I've never had such an occassion. Regardless, I am content for others to determine what works for them and their overactive imaginations.

Hey Bushmaster, i thought Caliban had strict carry laws and were against open carry?

You may find this surprising, but they don't mind that you are carrying a sidearm as long as it can be seen. Open carry in the country is legal, just not in town. You will scare the locals...Besides if I am going into a bad situation I will carry concealed whether I have a CCW or not...The laws of california are dependent on whether the cop got a piece recently or not as to whether he will invent a reason to cite you...I have had no problems with the game people or the local gastopo when carrying in the wilderness...

Oh By The Way...How are you this fine evening your Highness... Very Happy

I was in a similar situation once, I firmly believe my having a visible sidearm avoided a nasty situation (other guy was armed and wanted to start some crap until he saw mine). So we both believe in them... unfortunately without CCW, its not legal to have any firearm with you or in camp while archery hunting.
