Dust54...depends on the horse. Though they do tend to be more obedient then a mule. I've had both (17hd Missouri Red Mule)...If you have to go there no matter how dangerous it is I'd rather have a horse...

I don't know if I could put wheels on Ol' Joe. Not sure if he would have stood still for it... Laughing

Not sure how heavy a load they can carry. But you'll still have the same problem as with a horse or a mule...The smell of blood...

Putting a little thought into this one.

I would imagine that a trolley/cart of some sort would be best with only two wheels, and the best wheels would be those off a mountain bike or similar. The "platform" or carrier could not afford to be too big otherwise it would be a real bugger to move through the bush.

You wouldn't want it to be capable of carrying an enormous weight because you would never be able to pull it, but of course it would need to be large enough for your needs.

I am visualising an Esky or Cooler Box of around 55 litres maximum probably mounted sideways for stability, on a light weight metal base, a 26" x 2" mountain bike wheel on each side slightly rear of centre and a draw bar shaped to suit the individual. You could even incorporate a small storage box on the front for odds and ends like skinning gear, ammo water etc. I would also consider a webbing harness arrangement to allow for a hands free operation when desired/needed.

That is a very rough idea of what I would consider to be useful. I'm certain that there will be improvements "inbound"...which is great because someone might actually get around to making something and show us how its done.

Cheers, Vince

" I am visuallizing a cooler or esky box of around 55 litres maximum...."

Vince-I believe that you might not make it to the hunt if your cart were loaded with 55 litres of your favorite beverage! Laughing

Here's what I'm talking about. In fact, I think I'll buy this one from API. Aluminum, weighs 19 lbs. I have 2 API climbing stands and really like them.

Bushy,

I know there are a lot of folks who have very well trained horses and have spent a lot of time training and riding. I was just making gerneralization about the differences. I had a cutting horse (Blaze) when I was younger and lived on the ranch that I would not have traded for anything. But having said that, I would still perfer a mule in the high country.

Wheels on ol Joe? that I would like to watch!! Just getting the wheels on would be worth a trip out to see!!

Gidday Punkin...now that isn't a bad looking unit. Judging from the size of the backstraps for carrying it, I think the wheels would be about 12" - 14" which are a pretty good size for the scrub.

Reckon I could get a 55 litre Esky on that without too many problems.

Well yeah...maybe you are right mate...but I'd be happy...real happy. Laughing

Pumpkinslinger,

My dad bought a similar unit. I have never used it nor seen it be used. But he seems to like it. Smile

Pumpkinslinger,

I bought the heavy duty one sold by Cabela's a number of years ago. During the 3rd packout of an elk, the wheels shredded. Cabela's sent replacement heavier duty wheels without charge when I called them and complained. Haven't used it much since. They are most useful where old forest service and logging roads have been closed to motorized travel and are illegal to use in designated Wilderness areas. Unless near such a road or trail, it is often easier to butcher the animal where it falls and backpack the meat out (in Colorado) Unfortunately Pennsylvania requires that the whole animal be taken out in one piece (gutting permitted).

I suppose that you can always do it the good old fashioned way:

Looks like bloody hard work though.
