The Encore wasn't conceived to shoot "old school" by any stretch...as most who drive one would be of the Modern frame of mind.

I had a 1:48 Renegade that shot lights out with heavy plain lead and moderate charges of FFg, and that twist would be my brick wall.

Plain lead in a sabot will work as long as your componetry matches your criteria.

If forced to, a man could work up a decent kill load.........

My 1:48 Renegade never failed to drop what it was aimed at. I used 100gr fff with TC maxi bullets, and lubed with bore butter. Smile

The 700 dad has will shoot 2-3" all day long with 2 "pellets" and 165gr(I think they are) Cabelas' saboted bullets, and as long as you do your part in keeping things clean. I wish I could get out a bit more and maybe next year I just might have to steal his in-line and go after some freezer meat. By the way the two lower tiers of Iowa are allowing High-power centerfires to be used to cull the herd. And also Bobcats are now legal to take down there as well. Guess our turkey populations are large enough now to allow for that.

Anyway what part of Iowa you from Vint2? I am in SWI in Council Bluffs, grew up in Harrison county just to the north. I do my outdoor pursuits in the area.

And the "angle" is a pretty decent drive from here. I do not like driving up to Moorehead/Fargo that much when I need to go up to that area to visit family about a 7-8 hour drive depending on how much I have to stop.
The worst part is after you get north of Watertown, SD on I-29 and then drop down into the R R valley. Thankfully I now have a DVD player for the car, but I usually get to drive most of the time as Cathy's eyes are kind of sensitive to light, or a lack of light. HA HA!!

I am on a farm in Winneshiek County about 10 miles south of the Minnesota line. I just step out the door for my deer, turkey, or whatever I am hunting. I think the whole high power thing is asinine in Iowa. We do not need a high power season, but I see no valid argument for not having it!!! Confused Smile

By the way, speaking of plain lead bullets...

As for lead bullets in a sabot, I don't see why they wouldn't shoot OK but I wonder what the terminal performance might be since they would be "softer" than a jacketed bullet.

The dead Center sabots from Cabela's that I use are solid lead with a polymer tip and they shoot great and talk about terminal performance, they literally rip deer off thier feet.

Thanks d-hoffman, that answers that question! I hadn't seen the "Dead Center" bullets before, I was thinking more of the lead pistol bullets that would fit the sabots.

Mr Hoffman,

from your recent posts, it seems as though congratulations are in order! Good Job on your recent harvest.

Those are the ones; Dead Center sabots. Black sabot and a blackish tint with a blue polymer tip right?

For the most part I agree that Iowa does not need a centerfire season, but when you are luanching a 165gr to 240gr bullet and a one once slug that both are capbable of hitting a 2 inch group at range with the same amount of energy as the .30-40Krag, who cares what implement it comes out of the muzzle from. Or a 500gr slug from a 10" revolver, or a 250gr polymer tipped .45cal. doing around 2000FPS from a 8 or is it a 10" barrel?.

Better yet would be the old way of "forcing" hunters to harvest does with antlerless permits for two years and an either sex tag for the third. That is where it needs to be done to bring the deer pop. back into a more balanced number. But then I am just a line animal(factory rat), what do I know?
