Well Mr. D, I think you've come up with whatcha ya'll call a 308 case on steroids an' then some. Very Happy Yes, I think it is legal but up your way there's plenty of dangerous game. Smile Dave

Yeah its legal in Africa , most countries have a .375 minimum for the nastee stuff ..

Tho' your 416 at 2000 fps is not a good choice at all ..

Sorry , but having been there , and done that , I would want that 416 doing 2300-2400 fps with a 400 ..

It's ok Groovy, its still good for any big game I can go for here, or atleast its excessively over powered for any game over here. Laughing

GroovyJack,

I said it was "over powered" not "too much gun". Laughing Too much gun is when your hunting for meat and you don't have any left, like taking a 300Win Mag for rabbit hunting. Shocked

I think this round could knock a Grizzly off its feet, do you think so ?? Confused

Been kickin' the idea of a 416T/338 in my mauser. I have a 300winny w/switchout barrel of a 8mm-300winmag. All I'd have to do is swap barrels. Dave Very Happy

I'd go with a 300 grain X or a 350 grain triple X and really stomp somethin' into a pile..............

WW, I agree with ya. the 350gr will definitely do some damage. As for energy vs velocity, the 350gr I think imo would be a better choice. Just my .035 worth. Dave Smile

Fireball jus remember if ya wants to go with a 416 Taylor , there are two on that case , one is the Taylor , the other is a 416/338 , same round , jus ever so slight difference in the case dimensions , enuff to where a friend had a 416 built and ordered Taylor dies , and soon found out the chamber was 416/338 , dies wouldnt resize properly , liked to never figgered it out ..

D,
Sorry I missed this thread until now. I have designed a few cartridges and helped with the design of a few others. One cartridge I designed was a 30 cal rimmed revolver cartridge which works and works well enough to be adopted by a mfg co. But the owner of the company that was going to build a gun for the cartridge went, when he sold the company.

Hunnington may still make custom Dies, RCBS turned the custom stuff over to Hunnington several years ago. If they no longer make custom dies, they do make soft die blanks. However, the resizing dies would need be cut using a smaller demensioned reamer than the chamber reamer. You can not use a chamber reamer to cut a resizing die. You might also need forming dies and a neck reamer for the 416 Canuck. Oh, Hunnington and RCBS are both located in Oroville, CA.

Contact Clymer and they will give you a work sheet to produce the drawing they will need, to cut the reamer for you. The custom reamers were $210 last time I ordered one, as I recall, plus shipping.

On the other cartridges, the wildcat based on the 300 WSM is probably one of the Jamison series as Rick Jamison actually designed/invented the WSM line and Rick designed a 357, 375 and 416 Jamison as well as the 338, 30 and calibers below 30. The second I saw the 300 WSM I recognized it as a Jamison design. Rick was the reloading editor over at Shooting Times. Read this article:
galleryofguns.com/shoo...asp?ID=858

Cartridge design can be a dirty business, the big boys see nothing wrong with stealing another's work read here:
shootersforum.com/show...tm?t=30995

Regards the 30 caliber 357 Super Mag, that cartridge is known as the 30 Max, its brother is the 270 Max. Both were designed by Elgin Gates, the designer of the 357 Super Mag. The 357 Super Mag was the cartridge Remington renamed to Maximum and then tried to steal the development credit for, from Elgin. Elgin sued them and secured a letter admitting that they did not invent or develop the cartridge. I have a copy of that letter. I have owned a 270 and 30 Max in a handgun built by Jim Rock, the XL. I have also owned a 357 Harrett and several 30 Harretts in TCs. The 30 Harrett and 30 Max are in fact almost identical in performance. I have also owned a 30 Merrill which is a more powerful handgun cartridge, based on the 225 Win Mag.

If you want to protect a name, which is about all you can do, you will have to register the nane as a trademark. This is what JD Jones did with the 300 Whisper. However, that did not stop folks from just building 30x221s and walking away whistling.

You might be years ahead looking at the 416x300 WSM or the 416 Jamison for two reasons. First it is easier to stretch a neck than compress a body and second the 300 WSM brass will be thinner, giving you more capacity.

Oh, on the "What If" programs, I use a couple myself, the product you end up with illustrates more of a starting load than anything else. Most loads, if not all, can be improved upon a good deal.
Ed
