Zumbo's latest response (on ted nugents website):

Quote::
The last few days have been an educational experience, to say the least. My ill-conceived inflammatory blog, as all of you now know, set off a firestorm that, I’m told, has never before been equaled. I’m not proud of that.
Let me say this at the outset. My words here are from the heart, and all mine. No one can censor me, and I answer to no one but myself. And I have no one to blame but myself. Outdoor Life, a magazine that I worked for full-time as Hunting Editor for almost 30 years, fired me yesterday. My TV show was cancelled yesterday. Many of my sponsors have issued statements on their website to sever all relationships. This may cause many of you to do backflips and dance in the streets, but, of course, I’m not laughing, nor am I looking for sympathy. I don’t want a pity party.

They say hindsight is golden. Looking back, I can’t believe I said the words “ban” and “terrorist” in the context that I did. I don’t know what I was thinking when I wrote that. I can explain this as sheer ignorance and an irresponsible use of words. What I’ve learned over the last few days has enlightened and amazed me. As a guy who hunts 200 days a year, does seminars on hunting, wrote for six hunting magazines, had a hunting TV show, and wrote 20 books on hunting, how could I have been so ignorant and out of touch with reality in the world of hunting and shooting?

But I was. I really can’t explain it, maybe because I just summarily dismissed the firearms in question in my mind when I saw them in magazines and catalogs. I saw one “black” firearm in a hunting camp in all my 50 years of hunting, and I shot one last year off a boat when fishing in Alaska. To tell the truth, it was fun and I enjoyed it immensely, but I never considered one for use in hunting. I have to tell you that I have had a revelation. I’m learning that many of my pals own AR-15’s and similar firearms and indeed use them for hunting. I was totally unaware that they were being used for legitimate hunting purposes. That is the absolute truth.

My biggest regret is not the financial impact of all this. I’m almost 67 and retirement is an option. The dreadful impact here is that I inadvertently struck a spear into the hearts of the people I love most…America’s gun owners. And, even though this huge cadre of dedicated people have succeeded in stripping me of my career, I hold no grudges. I will continue to stand as firm on pro hunting as I’ve ever done. But what’s different now is that I’ll do all I can to educate others who are, or were, as ignorant as I was about “black” rifles and the controversy that surrounds them. My promise to you is that I’ll learn all I can about these firearms, and by the time this week is out, I’ll order one. The NUGE has invited me to hunt with him using AR-15’s, and I’m eager to go, and learn. I’ll do all I can to spread the word.

I understand that many of you will not accept this apology, believing that the damage has been done and there’s no way to repair it. You have that right. But let me say this. I mentioned this above, and I’ll repeat it. I’m willing to seize this opportunity to educate hunters and shooters who shared my ignorance. If you’re willing to allow me to do that, we can indeed, in my mind, form a stronger bond within our ranks. Maybe in a roundabout way we can bring something good out of this.

Yup Joe thats about it, on ANY hunting website I ever visited AR-15's are mentioned as varmint rifles, heck people who don't like AR rifles say its only good as a varmint gun when bashing it because of the small "un-manly" caliber its chambered in. So unless he was living under a rock which he wasnt he'd know they were being used by hunters all over. Smile

Maybe Zumbo really didnt mean what he said either. Maybe there is some magical hidden meaning in this ignorant post. And no less damaging. But no one has even bothered to see the good ol boy mentality of all the Zumbo/bushmaster generation.
If you echo his statement, maybe you should get educated and share the wealth of knowledge that makes you such an arrogant fool.

I agree, Jim Zumbo is full of crap...how could he not know? But then, most of these writers are in a different league, they don't hunt where we hunt, often get hunting opportunities we only dream about that we can't afford, etc. With that thought in mind, I think the hunts he's been on and the company he has had on those hunts, I can't imagine an AR type rifle being there. Those hunts, in my mind, would probably attract the most expensive hardware around, something special, something to talk about. Writers are generally out of touch with what us commoners would take on a hunt.
Keep it coming...

1895ss you need to think real hard about your own words in that early post. You sir are just as wrong as Zumbo and bushmaster. and when the heat is on, WAA WAA.
Get over it. I dont think so. Since both you and bushmaster are not world renouned writers, do you think that no one will notice and if they do what do you have to lose? Nothing. You don't even have enough personal integrity to admit that you made a huge blunder of word. Zumbo did.

I AM FAR MORE TROUBLED BY THE IGNORANT ECHO AND THE SECOND POSTED ABOVE. WHAT ZUMBO DID WAS WRONG, FOR ALL GUN ENTHUSIASTS.

Let me clarify my thoughts on this issue.
I agree that as hunters and shooters we must stand together. But I don't feel good about the use of the "assault" rifles for hunting and I have no interest in them. I like to hunt with a rifle in lever or bolt. But I don't really care if someone hunts with an "assault" rifle and I don't think I'm better then them because I use my lever or bolt. I actually believe we should be able to hunt with whatever firearm we choose, be it a handgun or rifle of any make or configuration. But I believe the future of our hunting and shooting traditions or rights, relies very much on public perception. I'll bet the anti gun and animal rights groups would love to paint a picture in the publics mind of hunters running around in the woods etc carrying "assault" rifles killing everything in sight. The only difference between you or I hunting with a traditional styled hunting rifle or an "assault" rifle is the image in the public eye and has nothing to do with ethics. There are ethical and unethical hunters carrying both kinds of firearms. It still comes down to public perception and that's why I feel they should not be carried by hunters while hunting. We need to try to get the public more on our side not push them away even more.

mc223, If you can read you'll notice I explained my thoughts on this thread and I stick by that and you'll have to learn to live with it. If you can't read then that's not my problem..........

I second that. I don't have anything against anybody owning one but they don't belong in the hands of hunters during hunting season................. I agree they make hunters look like terrorists. Joe public doesn't like us walking around with guns as it is, much less assault rifles same as is used by the terrorists etc. Neutral

This is the one I reference. Your clarification looks like Zumbos Oh s*^% now what do I do?
You say they make hunters look like terrorists. Retraction and appropriate appology is in order.

This quote of zumbo's makes me believe that he still does not grasp the signifigance of what he said or the damage done. THE SECOND AMENDMENT IS NOT ABOUT HUNTING OR "LEGITIMATE HUNTING PURPOSES". Wake up zumbo.

roklok... you make the point which seems to be being avoided here just as by Zumbo. Personal tastes (even my own) are not at issue... basic rights are. To echo ghosts of the past "every freedom we loose as a gun owner is another nail in the coffin by the anti's".

I don't advocate perpetuating the ignorance. It panders to those lobbying to take my guns and my right to own the ones still deemed legal. If ANYONE here would give up a right, instead of support legal gun ownershiop and use... then they have NO place to complain when another model, style, or "platform" is the focus of being abolished. Full automatic, semi automatic, pump, slide, double or single it makes little difference if they are taken away piecemeal or all at once if the population does not have the backbone to stand up and oppose such anarchy.

Hummmm...I didn't know that 1895ss and I were on trial here...We gave an opinion just like everyone else on this string. My belief is still the same. You want to own a "black" rifle. Be my guest. I'll even defend your right to own one. The second amendment even states that you have the right to own weapons that the military uses (once declassified). But remember that when you are seen by the enemies of hunting you don't paint a very pretty picture.

Good ol' boys? I don't think so. I'm very much an individualist. The "Good ol' boys" don't even like me. I hate "cliques".

mc223...You are getting a bit personal on a string and web site that prides itself on being a forum that allows opinions to spoken and discussed openly. Not jeered or ridiculed. Sad
