Well I went on alittle trip today, got myself 2 new toys! Very Happy

Well Micrometers not really toys but tools. Wink

A 0-1" Friction thimble with .0001 readings and carbide faces, and a 1-2" solid thimble with .001 readings with steel faces. Very Happy

Also got some TapMagic but no picture of that. Wink

And excellent choice of micrometers. Your great grandson will give them to his son.

Tapmagic...Good stuff.

Bushmaster,

If they last half that time it would be great. Very Happy

You see them being sold at auction from gunsmith estates, in perfect working order, so they will last a long, long time. 90% of good work is having good tools.

They are a pretty old measuring tool company. Probably one of the oldest in the world that are still around. Smile

Quality, quality, quality. Contrary to popular belief people will buy quality tools and other products no matter the price...I'm still using Starrett mikes that were made long before the clutch (friction) or ratchet thimbles. All in the touch...

So basiclly thouse micrometers are from the about start of the company. Friction micrometers came from 1873 made by Elliott Bros based on the design of French watch maker Breguet to limit the pressure someone puts on his watches when winding them, and the Ratchet came out of New Jersey developed by a man named George Church in 1883. Shocked

One thing though the 1-2" micromter didnt come with a standard, gonna need to buy one, but hey atleast Starrett put a cut out for the standard in the case Very Happy

And yes people will spend the money on Quality, I didnt buy 100$ plus micrometers because I wanted to by another cheapy made in China that sucks like the one my college gives all the students in our toolboxes. Wink

I don't know if my mikes are THAT old, but...

Check with Starrett. All mine came with standards. They may have oops it. Yours came with adjusting wrenches too. Didn't they??

They come with adjustment wrenches yes. But the Standards dont come with this model of micrometer as far as I know other 1-2" micrometer models come with them so the case is just a universal case hense the cut out without the standard. Smile

Its ok its just a 15$ Starrett Standard, not like they are charging a arm and a leg for it. Very Happy

PS. The 1-2" micrometer isnt a friction thimble or rathet thimble but a "plain" one with nether system on it. Sort of like yours I'd imagine Smile

Well bought a whole bunch of tooling, they didn't have most of it in stock so from me being at the store at 4:30pm Friday they managed to get it shipped out UPS and I got it today! Smile

Just waiting for a telescoping gage set and my micrometer standard now. Smile

Machinist tooling costs alot (when you buy good stuff anyways not cheap imports) could have bought a brand new Remington M700 CDL and a few boxes of ammo for the money I spent Friday. Shocked

No Remington CDL, want the 30-06 limited edition for the 100 years but I decided to get tooling to help me in my carrier once I get out of college. That way I can make money to get more then one rifle in the future! Very Happy

Used to set dies in punch presses in DEE-troit. Nice job! The pics of the Starrets brings back memories, the set of 0 to 1" that I still have came in just that way. An estate sale. Got them for 5 bucks in 1970, still work perfectly and have held zero all these years.

Starrett's are the best! Only Mititoyo(not sure of the spelling) is as good IMHO! Which dont count for nothing at home any way.

4rum,

That 0-1" micrometer cost me 111$, its pretty good, been using it in shop class and in shop assitant duties and works great. Pretty neat you used to be in the industry what do you do now ?? Confused

Crackshot,

Mitutoyo's are good yes, but I like Starrett. Just looking at there catalog I'd figure they stock pretty much everything a machinst will need to buy. Smile

There is however a 5-10% premium on Starrett verses Mitutoyo but doesnt matter to me not like I plan on replacing these tools anytime soon anyways! Very Happy

I didn't however buy a Starrett Last Word Test indicator (heard many not so good things about them, actually they are the only product I hear bad things about that Starrett marks :?) and instead got a Swiss made Interapid 312-1V since they are "the best" I'm told. At 345$ (about 1/3rd of the Remington I wanted :-D) you can be sure its still going to be working when I retire in give or take 45 years. Laughing
