Be careful when checking your game cameras

Something to worry about is this when you put your camera at a feeding site. The feed brings in the deer, also field mice that bring in ~~~~~~~~~~~~>

Looks like a Python of some sort...but then again I'm not familiar with snakes in the US.

It's a Timber Rattler also referred to as a Cane Break Rattler. There are those that say they are two different species. All I know is either will put you in a world of hurt if they bite you.
Here is another one, a 4 1/2 footer, that I loaded up with Speer Snake Shot before he made it to the weeds. They get bigger, up to 6 feet or a little more.

When they get this big they can easily reach higher than a 17" Snake Proof Boot.

Do they attack for the hell of it or are they docile unless provoked?

We have plenty of nasty deadly snakes over here in Australia too but no Rattlers, but that has been covered in another thread.

They are not overly aggressive but if you wind up in range before they have time to evacuate your a bit dude. As for the rattlers sometimes they give a warning and other times they don't. When the weather cools off some they get sluggish and many folks step on them while on a stroll through the woods. It does not pay to walk through the woods with your head up your rear.
The last few years I have killed about one rattler a year. Maybe I am just more carefull when on a stroll now and just seeing them more often.

In Texas it is against the law to kill a timber rattler?? Mad

I dont know if it is a state or fed endagered species. I will see if I can find out.
We kill several diamond backs each year during dove and quail hunts (Sept to Feb)
We even have them out sunning on rocks in January and Feb. Sure hard on dogs and they always scare me.
We usually have a big dove barbque and clean a couple of rattler and grill them up. White pretty meat and Taste just like chicken or cottontail but the meat is a little stringyier than chicken but good. Biggest I have kill is a 6 ft 6in Diamond back. It had 18 button on rattler but the end had worn off & missing. I think the State record is around 8 1/2 foot long. The are not aggressive and will crawl off if left alone. They never liked my SxS 12ga very much!

A teenage boy died over here on the weekend.
He was bit on the hand in a public park, he walked out onto the playing field during a game but was dead before reaching hospital.
Said to be an Eastern Brown, not the deadliest but close.

Heard about that on the news...very nasty. We have plenty of Eastern Browns here in Brisbane, but you never see them....they tend to keep to themselves unless stirred up.

I'm still looking around for a Carpet Python about 3' long that I can put in the roof of my house. Will keep the possums and mice away. Very Happy

Ya'll sure do have some nasty buggers for snakes down under. We have the Canebreak or Timber Rattler that Popgun showed, over here in South Carolina. Water Moccassins, Copperheads and coral snakes round out the poisonous snakes list. I'm not afraid of them, just give them a lot of respect. I once caught a timber rattler and put it in a pillow case and tossed it in the freezer. Wanted to skin it out and Didn't want to put a bullet hole in it[b]. Only problem was, I forgot to tell my wife about it. Shocked

Well........lets just say she needed some new bloomers after she found it and I spend some lonely nights alone in bed. LOL
