With so many getting Concealed Carry permits, I was wondering what weapons & calibers they decicded to carry and how they carry it. Has anyone had the need to pull it out? What, if any, is your story? I think there is a lot of interest on this subject and would like to see if I'm right.

George,
Have has a CCW for 20+ years. Got the permit within 2 weeks of avalibility in FL.

I have carried several guns over the years. My current walk around carry gun is a KelTec 380. Neat little gun, very light and potent. It can be carried in a very concealed position, a shirt pocket. I prefer a rear pants pocket, with a hankerchief to conceal the outline from the rear.

Most older folks I know started out big, 1911 in 45 APC and went smaller and smaller with their walk around gun. My truck gun, also covered by the CCW, is a 1911 longslide in 45. I did carry an AR-10T in the truck in 308.

Never had to use a carry gun nor was I ever tempted to use one, which is just fine with me. Smile
Ed

Firestar M-43. Strong side paddle. Before I have to field any questions for my (possibly temporary) gun choice. I have had this 9mm for 15 years with only one failure to feed and that was remedied with a little tweeking of the magazine feed lips about two years ago.

I have used my Colt SAA (.357 Mag) three times to bring peace to a situation. Once in 1966 in Hawaii to stop an attempted rape in progress. Once at home in Seattle in 1971 and once I tried to kill someone and emptied that Colt at a person messing with my wife in camp 1973. Luck would have it I missed him (100 yards running over heavy rock along a river)

Now I have a CCW and nothing will happen again. I'm good with that.

Ease up Spacedone.........

Well SwampFox, seems like we both like the KelTec P3AT in 380 auto, that's the one I carry most of the time as it's the easiest to slip into my pocket. I did have one in 32 cal. until the 380 came out.

I also have a Sig Sauer P232 in 380 auto as well. Somewhat larger than the KelTec and I shoot better with it. When my clothing permits, it's my choice to carry.

During the winter months I carry a SW1911PD in 45 ACP, it is equiped with the Crimson Trace laser grip, and I carry it in Fobus strong side holster. Not as easy to conceal in the warmer months, but, if I could, i'd have it with me all the time. It's the most accurate & has the greatest fire power.

If I could get away with it, meaning if I could carry it without others nowing I have it on me, I'd carry my SW460. Shoots like a rifle & I have no problem hitting targets at 200 yards. Muzzle blast though can really do a job on the ears.

I haven't had any situations to deal with yet, but I'm ready & willing to avoid becoming a victim.

As for Spacedone's comment, get past what upsets you. Everyone here respects what others have to offer. You gave your opinion, & I'm fine with that. If I offended you, I apologize. If you wish, let us have your contribution to this forum.

Bushmaster,

Sounds like a neat handgun made by the Spanish and they do make some good firearms, inculding the CEMTE/G3, But I think your Colt SAA seems more like you.

But back on topic. If CCW ever came to Canada or I moved to the USA I'd probably carry a small auto probably in 40 S&W maybe a HighPower. Smile

I have had a CCW in Pennsylvania since 1967. My current choice is a 2" Taurus Model 85 5-shot .38 Special. I carry inside the pants in the middle of my back. Last Sunday, my girlfriend got an 2" S&W Model 36 5-shot .38 Special and just submitted her CCW application. Both are loaded with my 168 grain hard cast SWC reloads.

Only had to draw one time and that was a 1911A1 on Thursday, January 22, 1998 when a deranged fellow attempted to crash into my home. He was not successful. All the best...

Hi George

Like you, my personal preference is for the Commander, mine being a LW Colt, and I carry it daily, open or concealed, as dictated by circumstances. When going concealed, it is in the Milt Sparks IWB. This was the first firearm I ever bought, 1958, and I have a strong affinity and respect for it. It goes to the range regularly and after nearly fifty years of service, it remains my "go to" handgun for all social occassions. Too, I'll carry a M60 S&W in a DeSantis three slot from time to time.

45 ACP ammo used: Winchester 230gr SXT, which takes the Black Talon to a much higher level.

I am not overly concerned if the handgun patterns slightly; given the number of pagers and cell phones worn "concealed", few would suspect there is a Commander under even a T shirt.

One observation: whatever is carried, practice in drawing and dry firing is critical. Under stress, we humans act a whole lot differently than normal and having the presentation pattern mastered can make the life/death difference whether concealed or open. I've had to draw mine three times.

Handloader, I agree, practice, practice, practice. The thing I work at the most is getting my concealed weapon into action from where ever I have it concealed. Those that are new to concealed carry should take note of this and practice often. Thanks for your contribution.

OH to be allowed CCW over this side of the pond- would be a dream come true.

our laws are so FUBAR that they almost actually protect the crims as they do a home invasion.

I am big enough to carry a full size 1911 and it not print.

I would choose a 1911 in 9x23 loaded hot with 147's and 10 or 11 round mags- but alas that will never happen.

6 days ago a longtime friend {i signed his marrige license} was murdered. he went to a party on the river and made a bad comment about his first wife who was there ragging on him. her new husband pulled his illegal metal baseball bat out and just blew him away then held the bat on the party and made his escape hes still being looked for. no one had a CCW at the party of 40 people.

im in a small rural town of 4000 in south central missouri and i knew everyone at this party {i wasnt there or it would have turned out differently} i dont have my ccw yet but i do carry a shotgun under my truck seat.

everyone knew everyone else and were partying together so it doesnt take a stranger to kill you. more friends ki9ll friends than strangers do.

It seems there is some personal feelings tied to this subject, I'd just like to remind people on both sides of a fence to be conciderate of others feelings / experiences. Its fine to discuss and debate things as long as respect is still maintained for the other.

That said, I find this discussion interesting as I'm looking into getting a CCW permit. I do not know if I'll actually carry it or just keep a "in truck" vehicle. Lately I've been in a few situations where although I doubt I would have actually brandished the weapon, I would have damn sure felt alot better knowning I had something with me (running into armed tresspassers in very remote areas while alone is not fun).

For a small carry weapon I like the look of an auto as it seems they are thinner and less bothersome, but one cant dismiss the reliability of a wheelgun. For those that carry revolvers, do you rest the hammer on an empty cylinder?

everyone should carry and everyone should keep a "truck gun" and everyone should be required to be trained in the safe use of said firearms.

for a time it might get bloody but the world would turn into a much safer place.

people know they can do anything with the slightest weapon because no one else is either allowed to have a weapon or just think weapons are for killing people.

guns are tools.

they protect us from each other and from wild things, they provide food for us to eat, they are fun to shoot, they build character and morals {if you shoot you know things will actually die and not be seen on the next exciting episode}

its what people do with guns that make them dangerous, i have friends with 14 year old boys who wont let there boys even hopld a real gun because its "TOOOOOOOOOOOOO DANGEROUS" while i was given my first 22 at 5 and taught how to be safe with it {kids who kill themselves by accident with guns almost never have been taught to use guns} a bottle of liquid cold is alot more dangerous than a gun.

learning is always a good thing.

learning to use a gun properly should be required.

Well I realized something I can get a CCW permit without moving to the US but its only Valid in parts of the US.

www.concealedcarry.ca/

I can get a non-resident CCW from the state of Utah and its valid in quite a few places. Just need to turn 21 and I can do the course and test in Canada and never actually go to Utah to get it. Shocked

On a Canadian Forum I visit a few people have got this and it is "for real". Smile

DallanC, many of the modern day revolvers can be fully loaded even with the hammer in full rest position. Ruger with it's transfer bar system is an example. I have a Taurus Gaucho SAA that uses the transfer bar system making it safe to have all cylinders loaded & the hammer down. It's usually with me when I'm out hunting.

I'd also point out that CCW laws vary in each state. Some allow you to have only one gun concealed. Having one on your person and one concealed in a vehicle at the same time may be illegal.

Having a switchblade knife may be illegal, but, with a CCW permit often makes it legal to carry. And there are some types of switch blades that are legal & others not. Some states may allow a knife & a gun to be concealed at the same time. & when you go to the authorities to get answers on these matters, you may be surprised to find out they don't have answers or there aren't any laws covering these things yet. This CCW thing is just not all thought out yet by the law makers.

Then there are places where, even though you have a CCW permit, you still can't have a weapon, e.g., inside a school (OK in some states to leave it in your parked vehicle); on government ground (military bases, post office, government buildings, parts of a airport, etc); at a restaurant where liquor is served; at a bar; at any store that has a sign that says no guns allowed, etc.

All of this, of course, is for the law abiding citizen, law breakers don't care. That's why, in the case of the later, I won't go into an establishment where I can't protect myself and you know that such establishments make you easy prey for lawbreakers.

A good CCW training program will spend a lot of time on such subjects and if you are planning to get a CCW permit, you should investigate the training curriculum as they vary, some being better than others...get your money's worth.
Keep it coming...
