Problem with this "quiz" is its about Whitetail deer. Where is the love for Muleys? Smile

I dont think we have more than a handful of them in my state. Occasional sightings occur near the Colorado border but nothing further inside.

DallanC - Why do you think that is ??, isn't Utah pretty similar to Colorado.

Sorry Dallan, I just happened across this Whitetail test and thought I'd share it with you guys. Muleys are a lot different to hunt, I've hunted for Mule Deer twice, and love it. We hunt Whitetail in Mich. much differently, Usually from a tree stand in thick cover with a Bow. You ought to try it, Tough animal to hunt, I'm not saying harder than Muleys just different.

Utah is much more drier than CO. I dont know if that has anything to do with it. I'd like to see some whitetails come in, I do not think they will directly compete with the muleys except on winter ranges.

The west's population of people is increasing, deer is decreasing. Already we are to the point you cant hunt deer every year. One thing is for certain in Utah however, the F&G absolutely 100% do NOT want whitetails in the state. As long as whitetail populations remain at a "speculation" level and not a countable, visible level there is nothing being done, but I have heard talk that if populations increase and they put any pressure on mule deer they might classify whitetails as varmints, shoot on sight.

It will be interesting to see how this unfolds... most expecially in light of the fact a wolf was reciently discovered dead in Utah, a place where wolves are not thought to exist. The ones introduced into WY and ID are thriving and expanding at an alarming rate.

There is nothing wrong with posting it, most people here hunt Whiteys.

I've seen enough hunting shows of guys in blinds to understand the way to hunt them, but it would take an awful lot of deer density to make it worth while. You can cover 100 sq miles out here with not a deer, rabbit or snake. Some people do hunt muleys out of stands along well used trails or water, but these areas are generally known and I see alot of arguments from different people who want to lay claim on a spot.

I like to be proactive, go to the deer. I get up on a mountain, use spotting scopes to find them then move to the animal. I've had distances over a mile or two from where I spotted them. Its fun.

I'd like to do a whitetail hunt sometime, just trying to find a good place with reasonable critters (would pay for private ground access).

Our deer tags dont mention species so if its a type of deer as long as its the right sex according to your tag it doesnt matter Wink

Dallan we have both Mule Deer and Whitetail in my area and seperate seasons and licenses for both. But what you may find interesting is that around here the Whitetail will generally keep out of an area that is generally inhabited by Mule Deer. Years ago a very large pasture area that I always hunted for Whitetail, and they were plentiful, started getting a few Mule Deer in it and a few years later you couldn't find a Whitetail at all. They had moved to the fields and farm land next to the pasture land.

In Colorado the Whitetail bucks are more agressive than the muley bucks and will breed the muley does creating hybrids. Its a problem in some areas.

Dallan, you need to hop the border into Wyoming. My step-dad figures he is feed ing an extra 5 to 10 tons of hay each winter to the whitetails. They come right up to the hay truck when we feed, you could take tham with a baseball bat.

We have taken 8 bucks scoring 140 or better the last three years. This year the Wyoming Game and Fish are issuing up to 4 additional doe and fawn whitetail licenses good from Sept 1 to December 31. This is in addition to the general tag that is good for bucks.

We have counted over 700 whitetails on one 120 acre field.

If you feel like border hopping, let me know. No fees, you just have to take at least 2.

I enjoyed taking the quiz. It serves as quite a refresher course for some of us. I agree with Dallan. Some modifications would be necessary depending on what part of the country you're hunting, but nontheless it is informative, especially for the newer hunters. Best wishes.

Intersting quiz..agrees with experience however and says I should stick to mulies. Our local blacktail also elude me with great success.. like whitetails access to private property would be an asset.

Good Hunting
