Are these chargers something that you could find at Tractor Supply?
Any idea how expensive the battery ones are? It is about 150 yards from the barn to the spillways, so that would be a lot of wire for a 120 volt system.

About any farm supply should carry them.

I bought one about 5 years ago. I think it was around $40.00 back then… more now, I‘m sure.

It would probably be too far for line voltage and a possible shock hazard. If you are that close to power you can always set up the 120 VAC base unit at the barn and run an insulated wire to the spillway. The shock wire itself would be the only section that would need to be bare wire.

This may sound like a dumb idea, but couldn't I take a car battery and set it between the 2 spillways (about 3 foot apart) and run ground leads into the water and the run a bare wire across the openings of the spillways close to the water?? Not a lot of volts, but a bunch of amps.
I don't want to sound cheap, but the price of a charger plus 150 yards (if I go in a straight line) of insulated wire sounds like it could get a little expensive.
BTW, I cleaned out the spillways last night and they were still clear today, I guess even beavers get a day off Smile .

The battery might work, I don't know. I would be careful using a straight car battery without fusing it. If the wire shorted out and no fuse it could possibly cause the battery to explode... bad news. Remember you would also be dealing with direct current on a battery and not alternating household current. With DC, stranded wire needs to be used. When there is a voltage draw, solid wire will act as a heating element.
Another option, a used charger. I would check local yard sales or flea markets. Also I'll check with my dad, when we raised horses we used them all the time. He may still have a old charger laying around, if so I'll gladly donate it to the cause. Wink Let me check this weekend, I'll let you know.

Maybe the battery exploding would finish the job if the electrical charge didn't do it Laughing

Been there, done that with the alligator. He got rid of the beavers and my bass and catfish. I never saw him, but his paw print meassured 8 inches across. I still get a little nervous when I go fishing Smile .
I guess my post about running a fuse in line with the battery didn't make it last night. Say 40 amp slo-blow ?

1+1+1+1+0............ 1 rat trap + 1 primer + 1 short fuse + 1 stick of dynamite = 0 beaver. Hmmm. Works for me.
As an aside, does anyone (other than me, that is) wonder what the Germans or the Japanese show by way of war films? Kinda tight budget there, I figure Smile

I have been checking the spillways everyday since the 5TH and no sign of beavers. Maybe they got the idea that Coyotehunter had something bigger in mind. I can only hope this trend continues. I have been trying to get a hold of my neighbor in hopes of taking photos of him using dynamite.
I may have hit 2 beavers. My dogs have been dragging body parts up to the house and I have found 2 skulls of beavers. So who knows.

Is there a category for Beaver in the Boone & Crockett books? See what I am thinking is if you blow one up with the dynamite, you could have your local taxidermist patchwork him back together again a little bigger than he really was and you could be right at the top of the books. Razz
My wife likes to do some patchwork quilting, maybe I could use them beaver furs for a comforter or something Very Happy
Heck maybe the dynamite will kill off your gator as well. And I know that the skin on him could bring a pretty penny. Laughing

If your wife did make a patchwork quilt out of beaver, at least it would be water proof Very Happy .
