Here is an H&R barrel stubbed rifle I just finished, in 225 Winchester...

Another good looking rifle, DS. Does it shoot as good as it looks?

Thank you!

Well, I cannot give you an honest accuracy report on this rifle, because it's not mine. I built it for a customer, took a couple of pictures of it, and shipped it off. If I hear anything back on it though, I'll be sure and give a report....

Well done mate, well up to your usual excellent standard. That is a sweet looking little single shot mate. There is a lot if enjoyment to be had hunting with a single shot.

Very nice! Did you have to do anything to the forend? Not that the barrel looks like it would be affected by pressure from the forend.

What do you think about such a H&R action? I once tried to develop a load for such a thing in .270 Win and I had to stop without proper results. Lot of cases brook. In my opinion, that action only locks from beneath and during the shot, when pressure goes up, the barrel opens a little on top and closes when pressure goes down again. So the case stretches too much each time.
Result was for me that I didn't trust that action anymore and I stopped load devellopment.
And no, I'm sure my pressure was still way below maximum!

but I have to admit that with such an action you can have a short rifle with still a long barrel.

And it's no critic at your work because that's splendid as usual!

Vince and Elvis - thank you!

BigBlue - I pillar and glass bedded the forend. There is almost 5" of bedded forend and the rest is free floated....

Aloysius - There are definitely better actions on the market, than the H&R. It is one of the "weaker" actions out there...

The 270 Winchester is one of the worse factory chamberings there is. It will in fact, shoot the barrel loose, faster than any other chambering. I have seen these guns new, that would lock up as tight as a bank vault, and less than "3" boxes of factory 270 ammo later, the barrel would rattle like a loose tooth in the receiver. That's one reason I see so many 270's to barrel stub. And by extending the barrel past the breech face, I can tighten the lock-up to where it is rock solid, and eliminate all of the play that was there...

I have gotten away from all high pressure cartridges in the H&R, and will only work with the smaller, lower pressure cartridges. Here is a short list of cartridges I build off the H&R -

17 Hornady Hornet...

17 Ackley Hornet...

19 Calhoon...

22 K-Hornet...

219 Donaldson Wasp...

222 Rem. Mag. Improves...

6mm TCU...

250 Savage...

6.5 TCU...

7mm TCU...

7X30 Waters...

30 Herrett...

30-30 Ackley Improved...

.38 Heavy Bullet - Sub Sonic

357 Magnum Match...

357 Maximum...

357 Herrett...

35X30-30 Improved...

40 S&W...

10mm...

45 ACP...

45 AR...

And there are several others, this is just what I could remember at a spur of the moment....

I've never handled one of those rifles. Nice looking rifle.

Is the receiver the same as a shotgun? Does it have powerful extraction?

The shotgun receivers are cast iron, and are referred to as an SB-1 receiver, and they have the large rounded shotgun firing pin...

The small firing pin SB-1 receivers are also fitted with 357 magnum and 44 magnum rifle barrels...

The SB-2 receivers, are made from a much stronger steel, have the smaller rifle type firing pin, and are designed for high pressure cartridges like the 223, 308, 270, 30-06, 35 Whelen, etc....
