LOL ok
45 ACP 220 gn - avg 800 fps
300 Whisper 247 gn - avg 1170 fps
45/70 510 gn - avg 1200 fps

looking at the increases in velocity and mass of the projectile,
The 45 ACP and the 300 whisper have roughly similar weight, to increase the velocity from 800 to about 1200 fps require a bit more than double the weight of powder.

Next the 300 Whisper and 45/70 achieve similar velocity, with weight of projectile almost double, requires almost three times as much powder.

Naturally the powder burning rate would make difference.
Ie, I can achieve about 1100 fps on 45/70 with 11 gn of Trailboss, but the load does not perform well on my gun.
Similarly 7 grains of AS-30 can bring the 300 whisper to 1350 fps, but it creates excessive pressure.

Fun isn't it?

I'm sure subsonic loading is a whole nother world. That came across when I read the .300 BO article.

Yup.....off topic again !!!

It seems as though no one has any experience (the original question) so we've traveled down this road of projection.

Witnessing as well as partaking in many of these types of arguments/debates I've come to realize that no one ever seems to take the hunters abilities or the realistic needs into account.
Ballistics in general are meaningless in a tree stand with a maximum shot distance of 50 yards.
Ballistics are also some what meaningless to a hunter who's stalking ability allows him/her to sneak up on their quarry.
I've often injected and advocated for the use of a .22LR into these discussions. Needless to say that usually inflames the debate.
Not once has anyone ever questioned me on shot placement or what I'd consider a max distance !!!

One last provoking thought...... varmint bullets Shocked

I was surprised when my elk guide replied that his favorite elk rifle was a .22-250 with varmits bullets and neck shots.

Not likely a good combination for a large boar.

unless you place it in the atlas joint from above or in his ear from the side.
Ive heard the same projectiles for .223 with fallow deer for head of neck shots..theory being a close to neck bone shot will still disrupt enough to demobilize and kill where a more solid type may breeze right through. I will stick to poking one through hilar area thank you very much. Id have to be plurry close to try a head shot and neck shots.....not MY cuppa tea..at this point in time.
some guys are loading 220 grain pills in x39!!!!! they look weird but work apperently. I have my eye on some neat 160 grain cast hollow points dirt cheap to try out when we go down that path.

I shot a goat on the neck once with a 300 whisper, it must have been hitting it sideways because the projectile broke the neck bones and near decapitated the goat.

I've taken fallow deer with a .223 neck shot...the buck dropped instantly, but it would not always be my shot, or calibre, of choice. A good solid heart lung with something a bit bigger than a .223 is what I consider to be more humane and a more guaranteed "bang flop".

why Im not a huge fan of neck shots was a big red hing at about 150 yards took one through neck with 150grn from 30/06 she flopped around a little but stayed up and turned around, I gave her a 130grn from .270 same result before she fell over. when skinning her our 2 shots were 2" apart going in from opposite sides and exited the same...both missed bone.
I have had better success with it but as said before I much prefer the hillar area.

And some people take fallow deer with a .22 Hornet. My czech friend takes almost everything with a .22 Hornet, he says that Winchester HP is OK for wild boars upto 60 kg. A south-african friend told me he took a jaguar with a 22-250 AI, the bullet entered the head only 6 cm and the animal dropped death on the spot.

some have problems with a big cal 12 for very little birds, even for rabbits, or what about the .22 LR for rabbits... other people take these rabbits with a .177 airrifle...

my point of view: you have to do your thing with what you're holding in your hands. When you want to eat the animal afterwards, there is not so much difference in shooting a rabbit with an airgun or with a .375 H&H, both have their own requirements.

but I have to admit that it has many advantages when you can do your thing without disturbing the neighbourhood, so great respect for who can whisper and still be understood, he usualy can kill without making a sound.

Agreed Aloy's, my father and grandpa did the same thing with the 22 hornet and 25-20 back in their days shooting deer, etc. Shot placement is better than big (caliber) miss-placement.

Thats awesome, reminds me of a professional roo hunter I meet in Queensland a few years ago.
He is shooting at similar speed from the back of a moving ute!
All head shots too so they can sell the meat.
Those people uses their gun as an extension of their limbs, simply awesome to watch.

Yep, this guy is good! Best I've done is 3 deer in 30 seconds and they weren't on the run. Just think what he could have done with a 6.8mm AR? (joking, joking)

He didn't say what caliber he was using. Anyone figure that out. He did say RWS bullets, maybe their Evolution?

rws-munition.de/en/hun...l#!0/16/15

What's up with the scope? Did he put it on backwards or do the German's make their scopes different then they do here in the US. You can mount a 1x scope backwards and it works - maybe have more light gathering capability.
