Is a bulge buster necessary? I am reloading 40 S&W and was curious if this is a must have.

Do your cases have bulges? If not it would be useless unless you got some range brass fired from a Glock.
I know there's a joke that I am passing up but it's just too easy.

If your sizing dies are properly adjusted and your shell holder is not made too high (as occasionally pops up...just replace it) you should be fine unless, as Paul said, you have cases fired from "unsupported" chambers or start seeing chambering issues.

I reload for one and I've done just fine without one.

As long as your chamber supports [fully] the case there is no problem. If not. Just keep an eye on the area just forward of the case head. Most full length dies will remove the bulge. Over time and several reloadings the case may become fatigued just forward of the case head.

I don't feel comfortable reloading cases with the "Glock smile" as that's the part of the case taking most of the rearwards pressure that could end up in my face.
Meh; we don't find that many bulged cases to throw in the recycling can anyhow.

thanks for the advice all. I am happy with not owning one then and saving myself to money to spend on something that I want more.
