HI

I have a AE 95 R 4WD wagon that I want to put a larger motor in.
Iam going to be towing a bike trailer soon carry some tools around and need more grunt.

I have been trolling the net for a couple of days now and people keep mentioning this engine cut out or casting cut out in the 4AFE block that has to be there for the 4WD function of my car to mount or work or be operative.

Can you please tell me if the 7AFE (1.8 engine from later corolla) engine has the same cutout??

I want to be able to get a motor from a later model corolla (AE102??) and put it in my engine bay and put a stronger clutch in it and drive the car for work and fun.

I have tried google searches for 4AFE modification, 4 AFE turbocharging, 4AFE/5AFE hybrid, 4afe/7AFE hybrid and various derivations there of.

Can you please help me.
It's a 1998 AE 95R 4WD wagon.

Thank you
P

Ogre, go to any of the 4WD Club sites on the net....preferrably Australian clubs as they are aware of the particular rules in regards to registration and licencing. There are always guys in the clubs that have done unusual engine conversions and can advise you.

However, you can put pretty well any engine and drive train into any vehicle if you have enough money to pay for the conversion. I gave a lot of consideration to putting a supercharged 350 Chevy into a 1978 Volvo sedan I had some years ago....make a scary "street sleeper".

What exactly do you want to use your 4WD for? A 1.8 Corolla engine doesn't seem like a swap that would give you much more in the way of grunt. If the primary use of your vehicle will be offroading and hard core 4WD then I would be looking at a diesel from another 4WD. If you want it to be for onraod use only buy a street car. If its for a mix of the two, be guided by those that have done a conversion.

Cheers, Vince

By the way my little hunting rig is a 1978 short box Chevy 4X4 with 120,000 original kms(74000 miles) and it has a small block 400 4bbl (RV cam)and a 3 inch lift kit/ 33 inch tires. It still has original paint and is just starting to rust around the rear wheel wells. I know nothing about Toyota's

Hey! I had a 1977 Chevy shorbox! Awsome truck... blew the bottom right out of the transfer case once in a baaaaaaaaddddd place (chain broke, folded over and was pulled around the bottom gear blowing the bottom of the case off... LOL). I told the other trucks "get the heck otu of the way, I'm going kamakazi" ... and I did too... LOL I made it up and out in 2x4 where I had been stuck and blown the 4x4 just minutes before.

Had Rancho 4" lift and 33"s... such a great truck. Make me want to dig up an old pict, scan it and post it.

Gidday ogre....what will it get you....an empty wallet for a good set. Seriously though.....you will get a horsepower boost that will depend on what else you have done to the motor and you should also get slightly better feul consumption.

If your motor is stock then the increase in horsepower will be minimal....they may just move rev range for the torque and hp around.

Have seen a lot of Toyota 4X4's with small block Chevy's in them. It is a tight fit but engine parts are cheap and it is a real ground pounder.

I agree with Vince except for the part about better fuel consumption in that people who want to tune cars don't generally do it for increased gas mileage so much as the ability to smoke the tyres in second gear. If you intend to just chunder round in it at 2500rpm, why bother? If you want hoof then remember that the more horses you have, the higher the hay bill. Good luck with it either way. Me - I'd just save my money and buy one that some other sucker had done previously and run out of dough in the process!
