thank you kind sir, yes my family are fine, the quakes shook my truck around quite a bit(enough to wake me up from a hard earned snooze) the wife and kids where at home and felt it but not too drastic as it was 8kms deep, no reports of major damage although the dreaded liquifaction is back in CHCH .

I heard about the quakes tonight mate...you guys are certainly copping a pizzling from Mother Nature.

Is the liquification as bad as last time or is only minor?

Be safe my friend and look after your family...we need your sense of humour and steadying influence here on The Nut.

Cheers, Vince

I don't like earthquakes, I've been in very few but seen a lot of damage from them. Glad you are all ok. Liquification is a new one on me, I saw some photos from the press of a car that sunk into it. If you were in the wrong place at the wrong time you could be swallowed up! like quick-sand, yeow!

Grew up in California from 1950 to 1969, mostly before the nuts, q----, and liberal A--h---- took over. Great place back then but I never even gave a thought to all the earthquakes we had. Don't know if it was because I was young and ignorant or because we had so many.

Anyway tell me about the liquifaction.

the earlier post on it has a great link on the stuff. basically its like screeding concrete, when you give it a vibrating/quivering wobble all the fine stuff like silt and water rise up to the surface. some houses are still intact but the silt is pushing against the floorboards this no ventilation/airflow, so damp and you are stuffed cant do anything other than dig it all out, dont fancy getting into a crawlspace that are 18" high at the best of times and taking gooey crap out a bucketfull at a time.

the earth has its faults. Glad to hear the damage wasn't that bad this time. Still not fun to be shakened & stirred.

One of the bad thing about liquefaction is that you tends to lose the hangi afterwards.

Is that right Elvis?

Just read this post, no extra police response to CHCH this time...we're too busy with christmas idiots and I'd have to say this week has been one of the busiest I have had in 21 years of policing. 0300hrs Christmas morning one of my Consts tazered a moron.....on christmas bloody morning!!!! FFS
I have just started 4 days off had a sleep from 0730 until 1130 great brunch barbecue that lasted til 5.00pm and am now seated at the computer having a well earned beer!

Christmas cheers and cold beers
