Chambered, the 7mm-08 vs .280 Rem would be the same argument as the .308 vs .30-06. No real difference until maybe you got into the heavy bullets. For that matter there is no real difference between any of the four cartridges, along with the .270, etc.

I love the .308 but I prefer the 30-06 if for no other reason I'm addicted to the M-1 .

And I absolutely loved the 7.62mm M40 I used in Vietnam also, but I don't have it. They made me give it back when I got home.

But, it is probably the most outstanding rifle I have ever used. Of course with some help from my Dad it was modified a tiny bit, he sent me a much better scope and a Navy machinist helped me install it.

Anyway, that was a long long time ago, but I believe because of that rifle I and many others are still here today. And, if I could afford to get one I would, in a heartbeat.

Memories, they are great.

Ah Eric....but what sort of rubbers would you use on that slingshot mate....solid rubber, tube rubber, double or single rubbers.

I reckon the the tube rubbers are alot better than any of them...and you can throw light and heavy projectiles with them. Poke Poke Very Happy Very Happy

7.62 -54R - That's a nice shell that's been in use since 1891 .

If we are going by age the 303British has been in service of King and Country since 1888 (actual production started in 1884 for the Lee-Metford, and it was some time before that when it was being developed for the then new rifle 1888 was when the rifle and ammunition were "officially" adopted) originally meant as a Black Powder round. I guess the M40 I used in Nam is why I was so interested in the .308. Further, I believe that in a time of crisis the cartridges as well as used brass for the .308, and the 7.62x51mm NATO will be more available than some other cartridges, with the exception of the 22. Dimitri, as you advised the US military is using this round in its machine guns. So, there should be lots of brass around. But, your suggestion of the .303 British is not a good comparison, a quick look at ballistics table indicates the .308 is superior.

I have used a lot of rifles in my days, but I believe the M40 was the best. I cannot substantiate my feelings, but I slept with this gun for nearly two years, so my interest is probably not objective, but is most certainly subjective.

It saved my life many times, and Katie was well know in my troop. As I said the scope was not standard issue, but for the life of me I cannot remember who manufactured it, but it was a 6X14, and was much better that the issued Unertl 10x .

Any way, I will be buying a Savage .308 caliber, and will customized it as close as I can to Katie. Yeah, I know the original Katie was a Remington, but I like the Savage.

To cater to the -06 crowd, I will also be getting one of these too.

But, here's the sad thing. I have no doubts that Miz Dee will not allow me to sleep with Katie 2. Laughing
