Arizona Hunter: The Alaskan by Meindl get high praise from Alaskan sheep guides and hunters. They have a stiff midsole for the most extreme of rugged climbing, especially when carrying a heavy pack. The Perfek model is another recommended boot, but with a more flexible midsole and improved comfort. My selection, so far, has narrowed to:

Lowa

Hanwag

Meindl

Schnee

Each brand has their proponents and few detractors which is a good indicator of satisfaction. I am leaning toward the Hanwag but the Perfek is tempting. In fact, it may be worthwhile to get a pair of each and test them in Unit 29, the Chiracahuas. IMO, that is the most rugged, scree laden hunting in all of Arizona and would put both boots to the test.

I had to finally discard two pair of Danners that have been used beyond the rebuild stage. I've always liked Danners and for the majority of hunting they have been excellent choices. The extreme conditions of Alaska, however, seems beyond their range of application.

Another type of boot getting some good reviews are all plastic construction climbers, although, they seem to be more in the developmental stage at this time with some praise and damnation from users. Most find them rugged and protective but not with a high level of comfort.

Hmmm, the info on the Perfect is useful, regarding the flexability, but I wish it had 200 gram rather than 400 grams of Thinsulate.
I phoned Cabelas and asked if it was possible to get the Denali with the rubber toe cover and rand (like the Alaskan) then it would be even better. They said no, but will mention it to purchasing.

Let me know what you end up with and why.

Military issued boots
high for ankle support, good tread and a metal shank.
I've worn mine while hiking at 12,000 ft and above in Colorado and they
save my ankles and arches on the rocks and on the descents.
Yes I was one of those moms that wear army boots.
My favorite boots here in Montana are my leather moccasin boots, lite and comfortable and stealthy, goes all the way above the knees and are good in sagey, thistlly, cacti areas.
