62 or 63, can't remember. Need to check the records when I get home.
Last one was at 479 lasered yards with the .257 Roberts and a 75g V-MAX at 3600fps a few weeks ago.

Had to check th records as I had to add another one. #64.
Love that .257 Roberts, Leupold Vari-X III 4.5-14x, Hornady 75g V-MAX bullets and a healthy dose of Varget!
This one fell at 150 yards, more or less. I had stopped above a brush-filled ravine and waited to see if anything would pop out. They coyote did, and I followed it in the scope. It stopped to get a better look at me, presenting a broadside shot. About a quarter-second after it stopped the trigger broke. Never knew what hit it.

ripper –
Once in a rare while my wife goes, but I’ve never taken a coyote when she was along. Missed a shot at a runner once and think that has been the only shot taken. Also take my elk hunting buddy even less frequently, and my brothers when they are in town (meaning once or twice each). Mostly its just me.
Probably not the kind of hunt you are thinking of. I have a couple ranches I hunt but driving around the perimeter. Have tried calling a couple times, no success and gave up. All 64 coyotes have come from an area maybe 2-1/2 square miles total. I tend to drive the ranches weekend mornings and, once in a great while, weekend evenings.
I keep thinking I’d like to go on a ‘real’ coyote hunt one of these days. Talked to a guy who went to South Dakota while the cattle were calving – got 50+ coyotes in one week. Makes my tally look rather pathetic. But then reality sets in – if I’m going to burn a week of vacation, it sure isn’t going to be spent hunting coyotes!

Make that 65. Had a running shot at one this morning, about 250 yards and missed.
Later I had a shot at another runner, but this one was running more or less straight away. 163 yards. Not much of a challenge with the .257 Roberts and a 75g V-MAX zipping along at about 3700fps.

Make that 66. No, make it 67!
At 5:30 the alarm went off and I got the gear together to go look for coyotes – the .257 Roberts again, some ~3700fps 75g V-MAX loads, the range finder and the binoculars. It was a beautiful day, overcast to the east so no fighting the sun, mid 50’s and just a touch of a breeze.
I started out on “Dead Horse Hill†with no luck, then investigated the two draws further west where I got the last couple of coyotes. Nothing. I turned the truck around and worked my way back east and around the southern perimeter of the ranch. Eventually I came to the big valley above Dead Horse Hill. The rancher had dragged a dead horse out and left it in the scrub oak a few weeks back, and I had finally found it a week or so ago. I sat and watched the valley and was eventually rewarded with a blur of motion on the far hill side, above where the dead horse was. I estimated 300 yards and found one coyote, then another. After cranking the scope power up to about 8x, it took me a few seconds to locate the coyotes again. One stopped and turned broadside to look at me. I centered the crosshairs on its shoulder and squeezed. The sound of a solid hit echoed back, but the coyotes were on the run – a miss! How I can hit 3 out of 4 clay pigeons at 300 yards and then miss a coyote at that range is a real mystery!
The coyotes were running almost straight away and up hill, not an easy shot but one I’ve made before. Two V-MAX bullets went their way, both misses. I lost them in the scope and when trying to find them again I found something else – a pile of tan and creamy white lying on the ground. The angle and position was such that I couldn’t make out just what it was, but I lasered the range at 313 yards. After driving over to get a closer look my suspicions were confirmed – the first shot was a solid hit. There had been three coyotes instead of two. This one was Coyote #66.
Further up the valley I crossed over the dry wash and climbed the hill on the far side. As the truck crested the hill I looked into the valley off to the right and spotted something through some brush. My eyes couldn’t make out what it was but the binoculars confirmed it was a coyote sitting on its haunches watching me. I killed the engine and jumped out, laying the rifle across the hood of the truck. The coyote decided that was enough and took off running. It ran up a small dam (no water on the other side) and stopped on top. The crosshairs were on it a split second after it stopped. Coyote #67.

Make it 68.
Picked up another one in the same place I got the first one on Saturday morning. It ran up the far hillside and I dropped it at an estimated 300 yards. Turned out it was 7 feet past the one on Saturday. which I had lasered at 313 yards. Make this one 315.
I do love that .257 Roberts!

Got #69 this morning using the .257 Roberts and 75g V-MAX again. 320 lasered yards. Saw another one oin the same area later but it was 700 yards out, no shot. Maybe next time...
