YUCK This is interesting . .. .

Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who ...had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back.

It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow colouring and sold it to people to use in place of butter. How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavourings....

DO YOU KNOW.. The difference between margarine and butter Both have the same amount of calories.
Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams; compared to 5 grams for margarine. Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.

Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods.
Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few and only because they are added!
Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavours of other foods.
Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years .
And now, for Margarine..
Very High in Trans fatty acids.
Triples risk of coronary heart disease ...
Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol)
Increases the risk of cancers up to five times..
Lowers quality of breast milk
Decreases immune response.
Decreases insulin response.
And here's the most disturbing fact... HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING!
Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC... and shares 27 ingredients with PAINT.
These facts alone were enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).
Open a tub of margarine and leave it open in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will notice a couple of things:
* no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something)
* it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value ; nothing will grow on it. Even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to grow.

Why? Because it is nearly plastic . Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?

Knew it wasn't good for you but didn't know it was this bad. Been using butter for a long while.

Becel funded a research lab, about 25 or so years ago, to test the different margarines and the control was butter. They were given complete control and it was a no holds barred test.

It turns out that Becel was the best but they also found that butter was not as bad as previously thought.

That was the time I started to use butter again.

The tests that were on the molecular level came out later, that sure is an eye opener.

Thanks for showing/reminding us this Tremblay.

Interesting but how much of that is true?

Emperor Louis Napoleon III of France offered a prize to anyone who could make a satisfactory substitute for butter, suitable for use by the armed forces and the lower classes. French chemist Hippolyte Mège-Mouriès invented a substance he called oleomargarine, the name of which became shortened to the trade name "margarine". Mège-Mouriès patented the concept in 1869 and expanded his initial manufacturing operation from France but had little commercial success. In 1871, he sold the patent to the Dutch company Jurgens, now part of Unilever. In the same year the German pharmacist Benedict Klein from Cologne founded the first margarine factory "Benedict Klein Margarinewerke", producing the brands Overstolz and Botteram.

Margarine is a semi-solid emulsion composed mainly of vegetable fats and water. While butter is derived from milk fat, margarine is mainly derived from plant oils and fats and may contain some skimmed milk. In some locales it is colloquially referred to as oleo, short for oleomargarine.

Margarine, like butter, consists of a water-in-fat emulsion, with tiny droplets of water dispersed uniformly throughout a fat phase which is in a stable crystalline form. Margarine has a minimum fat content of 80%, the same as butter, but unlike butter reduced-fat varieties of margarine can also be labelled as margarine.

Now I'm not sayin it's ok for you and I'm not saying it's plastic waitin to happen but ........

And I'm not saying that I will ever use oleo or margarine. I will say, however, that only real butter is allowed to pass my lips. I especially like butter and peanut butter on bread.

I used to do butter and peanut butter slabs but since I found out that I'm allergic to nuts, alas no more.

Peanut butter and honey sandwiches for when I was out hunting - that was YUM!

If you've never tried a peanut butter and banana samich with buttered toast, you've never lived. It is especially wonderful and at the same time nasty and messy if you grew up using tortillas instead of toast. My grandmother used to fire up the outdoor woodstove early in the morning and make tortillas so we could eat breakfast before school. She's butter up some hot tortillas and spread peanut butter on them. To make a real hearty breakfast she'd also add a banana to the rolled up hot sloppy mess and we'd have dripping butter and peanut butter with a squishy hot banana all over us. The banana was like a wet bar of soap in that tortilla tube of peanut butter and it was fun as heck to eat, messy but fun.
